Woman in banana costume aids driver after SUV crashes into Orlando bar

A nursing student in a banana costume stopped to help after an SUV slammed into an Orlando bar patio early Saturday, turning a simple act of decency into an online sensation.

Surveillance video captured the chaotic moment around 4 a.m. when an SUV veered off the road and crashed into the outdoor patio at Moderne on East Colonial Drive in Orlando, Florida. The vehicle struck a cement planter and sent tables and chairs flying. No one was sitting outside at the time, and no injuries were reported.

WFTV Channel 9 reported that Stephanie Oropeza and her fiancé were heading home from a Halloween party when they saw the crash unfold. She was still wearing a banana costume. They pulled over anyway.

Oropeza said she did not hesitate.

"I’m actually going to school being a future nurse so it was just instinct,"

she told Channel 9. She added that she needed to call for help and make sure the driver was okay.

Bar hunts for the mystery banana

Moderne later took to social media looking for the woman in the banana costume so the business could thank her. The post joked that the bar had an “appealing offer” for the mystery banana, but she had already “split.”

Oropeza’s response cut through the online joke with a plain standard too many people now treat as optional.

"I feel like that’s the bare minimum you can do to be a decent human being these days,"

she said.

That is the point. Stopping to check on a driver and call for help is not heroism theater. It is basic citizenship. A future nurse on her way home from a costume party still recognized a stranger in trouble and acted.

Owner gets the news from half a world away

Moderne owner Michael Nguyen was in Japan with his fiancée when the city of Orlando called about the crash. The time difference left him unsure at first whether the call was real. He was thankful no one was hurt and said he was glad the episode had turned into a lighthearted story rather than a tragedy.

Nguyen is now looking into working with an architect on more safety barriers outside the building. The cause of the crash has not been confirmed. The driver has not been publicly identified.

In an age when bystanders film first and help later, a woman in a banana suit did the adult thing: she stopped, checked, and called. Common decency still works when people choose it.
