Mechanic films warning at 260-foot waterfall edge, then falls to his death

A 32-year-old Brazilian mechanic filmed himself warning that a fall from a 260-foot waterfall meant certain death, then plunged fatally from the edge.

The Sun reported that Mauricio Marques Gomes, a mechanic from Macae near Rio de Janeiro, climbed Cachoeira da Fortuna, Fortune Waterfall, in Corrego do Ouro, southern Brazil, on a Sunday solo hike during a public holiday honoring the country’s patron saint.

He stood at the brink, recorded a blunt warning, and shared the clip on his WhatsApp status. Hours later he was dead in the pool at the base. His phone stayed behind at the top.

Friends launched a desperate search that evening and kept looking into the night after he failed to return home. Just after midnight, his body was found underwater below the falls. Firefighters recovered it.

He filmed the danger, then tried to cross the slick rock

In the video Gomes posted, he stared over the drop and spoke straight to the camera.

Gomes said:

"After falling from here, my son, it’s only death, right? Are you crazy? Who could survive that?"

A friend later explained the plan that followed. Gomes intended to leave his mobile phone running while he crossed a rock coated in slippery algae. Investigators said he may have slipped and struck his head on a rock as he went over. Forensic examiners concluded he died from injuries caused by the fall. A friend who filmed the recovery area said the drop could have been some 262 feet.

The sequence left little mystery about the outcome. He warned that survival from that height was impossible. He then moved across the same treacherous edge he had just described. The phone kept recording at the summit. His body ended in the water below.

Another waterfall slip ends the same way

The Sun noted the tragedy came after a separate fatal fall. Valentina Stragliotto, 27, slipped on a boulder at a waterfall in Ella, Sri Lanka, and plummeted nearly 100 feet in front of a friend. She had posted her own love of the outdoors.

Stragliotto said:

"My place is in nature. I love hiking and climbing and I especially love waterfalls."

Two different countries. Two hikers drawn to waterfalls. Two fatal drops after contact with slick rock. In Gomes’s case, the warning was explicit, the algae hazard was known to him through his friend, and the height left no margin.

No absolute calendar date for the Sunday climb appears in the available account, and officials released no longer verbatim statements beyond the slip-and-impact explanation and the finding that fall injuries caused the death. What is established is plain: a solo holiday hike, a recorded warning at the brink, a planned crossing of algae-covered rock, a phone left at the top, and a body recovered from the pool after midnight.

Gravity does not grant do-overs. When the edge is wet and the drop is measured in hundreds of feet, common sense is the only safety rail that matters.
