Kelly Ripa gave fans a lighthearted update from her recovery bed this week, posting a video with her podcast producers while she remains off the air following gum graft surgery last month.
The 55-year-old talk show host appeared on the official Instagram page of her Let's Talk Off Camera podcast on Wednesday, lying in bed alongside producers Jan Schillay and Albert Bianchini, microphones in hand. The clip, which was sponsored content for mattress brand Sleep Number, showed all three appearing to doze off at one point, a scene the caption played up.
The video marked Ripa's most visible public appearance since her husband and co-host, Mark Consuelos, revealed on the July 27 episode of Live that she had undergone gum graft surgery and would be out for the rest of the month. Consuelos described the procedure bluntly.
"Kelly had a little bit, well, it's not a little, she had a gum graft surgery."
Guest co-host Nick Jonas responded: "Wow. That's got to be the hardest thing she's ever done." The remark was a nod to the fact that the procedure requires patients to avoid talking during recovery, a tall order for a woman who has made a career of it.
Gum graft surgery treats thinning or receding gums by replacing lost tissue around the teeth, as described by the Cleveland Clinic. Ripa's dentist had recommended the procedure five years before she finally went through with it. She is known for skipping novocaine during dental visits, but this surgery reportedly caused her notable pain.
Ripa has said overbrushing her teeth contributed to the gum recession that made the surgery necessary, a detail that underscores how routine habits can lead to serious dental procedures.
The day after his initial announcement, Consuelos gave viewers an update. He said Ripa was "feeling better" and already "saying certain things" against her doctor's orders. The show has been airing pre-taped episodes during her absence, including never-before-seen host chat segments and encore celebrity interviews from earlier in the season.
Consuelos has relied on a rotation of guest co-hosts to keep the show running. Actress Carrie Coon was among those who filled in during Ripa's extended recovery.
In the Instagram video, Ripa sounded relaxed and joked about the unusual recording setup.
"I am so sleepy. I'm extra comfortable today because Jan, Albert, and I are in bed together."
She continued: "We are in bed together, and we are happy as clams. We are so comfortable. Although Albert's on my side, so he's roasting."
A voiceover during the clip had Ripa saying, "We're celebrating small rituals that signal it's finally time to unwind." The caption on the post read: "Kelly was so comfortable on her @sleepnumber bed, she almost fell asleep while recording this episode! #sponsored #ad."
Whether the Sleep Number episode was filmed before or after her surgery remains unclear. On August 5, Ripa also appeared makeup-free for a podcast interview with Dr. Jill Biden, though that conversation is assumed to have been recorded before the procedure as well.
Ripa, who became a permanent co-host of Live in February 2001, is expected to return to the show's New York City studios on September 8 for the Season 39 premiere. That is more than six weeks after Consuelos first disclosed the surgery, a lengthy absence by daytime television standards.
Public figures sharing health struggles openly has become more common in recent years. Reading Rainbow host Mychal Threets recently announced plans to seek hospital care for his mental health, and other television personalities have been candid about their own medical journeys.
Meanwhile, the daytime television landscape continues to shift. Kelly Clarkson recently announced a new single as her own talk show era winds down, a reminder that the hosts audiences rely on every morning do not stay behind the desk forever.
For now, Ripa's fans will have to settle for sponsored bed videos and podcast clips. The woman who built a career on never running out of things to say is, for once, under orders to keep quiet, and by all accounts, she is not very good at it.
