El Niño, Saharan dust, and wind shear keep the Atlantic hurricane season remarkably quiet

The Atlantic basin has produced just two named storms heading into August, with a strengthening El Niño, persistent Saharan dust, and punishing wind shear combining to suppress tropical development even as waves continue rolling off the African coast.

FOX Weather hurricane specialist Bryan Norcross put the situation bluntly: the National Hurricane Center "continues to show crickets across the Atlantic, the Caribbean and the Gulf into this weekend." That assessment covers millions of square miles of open ocean, and none of it, for now, is producing anything close to a hurricane threat.

The quiet stretch is unusual but not unexplained. FOX Weather meteorologist Stephen Morgan broke down the three forces acting as a roadblock: El Niño's grip on upper-level wind patterns, a blanket of dry Saharan air drifting westward over the Atlantic, and strong wind shear tearing apart any wave that tries to organize into a storm. Together, those factors have turned the Main Development Region, the belt of warm ocean between Africa and the Caribbean that serves as the starting blocks for future storms, into a hostile environment for tropical cyclones.

Only Arthur and Bertha so far, with Cristobal nowhere in sight

Two named storms have formed this season. Arthur arrived in June. Bertha followed in July, making landfall along the Gulf Coast. By historical averages, the third named storm, which would be called Cristobal, typically forms by August 3. That benchmark is approaching with no candidate in view.

Tropical waves themselves are not scarce. On average, 60 to 65 of them roll off the African coast each year as the continent's monsoon season strengthens, with a new wave developing every two to four days during the peak window. The wave season runs from April through November. Waves are emerging on schedule. They simply cannot survive the gauntlet waiting for them over the open Atlantic.

One large disturbance sitting west of the Cabo Verde Islands drew some attention, but forecasters assessed it as fading. A northern fragment of that system had been eyed as a possible development candidate, but by Sunday night it was "looking less likely," according to the FOX Forecast Center.

Norcross acknowledged a narrow scenario in which that northern piece could still organize:

"This is a little bit plausible because, in this scenario, the disturbance would migrate west well to the north of the hostile winds across the Caribbean. It would still have to survive its encounter with the Saharan dust."

Even his measured optimism came wrapped in a caveat. Surviving the dust is no small thing. Saharan dust plumes have blanketed wide stretches of the Atlantic this season, choking moisture out of the atmosphere and stabilizing air columns that tropical systems need to build vertically. Without that vertical growth, a wave stays a wave.

El Niño could reach "super" status and keep suppressing storms

The biggest factor behind the quiet Atlantic is El Niño, the periodic warming of equatorial Pacific waters that reshapes weather patterns across the Western Hemisphere. El Niño increases upper-level wind shear over the Atlantic, which rips developing storms apart before they can strengthen. This year, forecasters expect El Niño to potentially reach "super" status, becoming one of the strongest El Niño events ever recorded.

An updated forecast from the El Niño/Southern Oscillation monitoring program, the official gauge of El Niño's strength and trajectory, is expected in mid-August. That update will carry significant weight for the rest of hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through November 30. NOAA has already forecast a below-average Atlantic hurricane season as the Super El Niño builds, and nothing in the current data contradicts that call.

Water temperatures across the basin are hovering slightly above average, warm enough, in theory, to fuel storms if other conditions cooperated. But warm water alone does not make hurricanes. Wind shear and dry air can neutralize even the warmest ocean surface, and both are abundant right now.

Eastern Pacific tells the opposite story

While the Atlantic sits dormant, the eastern Pacific has been "extremely active," with El Niño fueling tropical development on that side of the continent. The contrast is stark. The same climate pattern that suppresses Atlantic storms supercharges Pacific ones, and this season is following that textbook split with unusual precision.

Hurricane Genevieve recently reached Category 5 intensity in the eastern Pacific, the first storm to hit that threshold in two years, a reminder that El Niño does not eliminate tropical threats but redirects them.

The FOX Forecast Center flagged one more wave to watch early next week. Computer models suggest a tropical wave could try to organize between Monday and Wednesday, but forecasters tempered expectations immediately.

"As of right now, it remains only something to watch, as it too will have to contend with all the same unfavorable conditions mentioned above. The tropical wave could try to organize next Monday through Wednesday."

Same dust. Same shear. Same El Niño. The odds are not in its favor.

Peak hurricane season still lies ahead, with September historically producing the most intense storms. El Niño is expected to keep strengthening through that window and beyond, which means the same suppressive forces could persist well into the fall. If the mid-August forecast confirms a march toward super El Niño territory, the Atlantic may stay quieter than most years through the heart of the season.

A quiet hurricane season is good news for the millions of Americans living along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. But it is El Niño doing the work, not better planning, not smarter policy, and not luck. Nature handed the coastline a reprieve this year. Residents and officials would be wise not to mistake a weather pattern for a trend.
