El Niño marches toward historic strength, keeping the Atlantic hurricane season unusually quiet

A strengthening El Niño is suppressing Atlantic tropical activity two months into hurricane season, and forecasters say it could become one of the strongest on record, with major implications for the months ahead.

Only two named storms have formed in the Atlantic basin since the season opened June 1, one in June, one in July, and both developed close to the U.S. coast rather than in the deep tropics where most major hurricanes are born. Tropical waves continue rolling off the African coast into the Atlantic's Main Development Region, the broad stretch of warm ocean where storms typically organize and intensify. But those waves are running into a wall.

Hostile upper-level winds driven by El Niño, combined with thick plumes of dry Saharan dust drifting westward, are choking off the thunderstorm clusters that tropical systems need to survive. FOX Weather meteorologist Melanie Black reported that El Niño is expected to reach "super" status and could become one of the strongest El Niños ever recorded, a forecast that, if verified, would keep conditions hostile across the Atlantic well into peak season.

Warm water alone cannot overcome what El Niño is doing to the Atlantic

Sea surface temperatures across the basin remain elevated, and under normal circumstances that warmth would be fuel for storm development. The FOX Forecast Center acknowledged as much, noting that warm ocean water is "one thing in favor of tropical system development." But El Niño's influence is overwhelming that advantage.

Wind shear, the difference in wind speed and direction between the lower and upper atmosphere, tears apart storms before they can organize. El Niño pumps stronger westerly winds into the upper atmosphere over the Caribbean and tropical Atlantic, creating exactly the kind of shear that kills developing systems. Add a persistent blanket of Saharan dust, which dries out the mid-levels of the atmosphere and blocks the moisture tropical storms need, and the result is a Main Development Region where waves roll through but rarely survive.

The FOX Forecast Center put it plainly: "much of this area is dominated by strong wind and widespread dry, dusty Saharan air, which is suppressing thunderstorm development." Whether any system can punch through those conditions depends on "hostile winds, Saharan dust and ocean temperatures," the center said, and right now, two of those three factors are working against development.

Gulf of Mexico and Southeast coast remain the likeliest trouble spots

If the deep Atlantic is largely shut down, where should Americans along the coast pay attention? The FOX Forecast Center identified the Gulf of Mexico and the Southeast United States as the areas of greatest concern for what forecasters call "homegrown" tropical development, storms that form closer to the coast, outside the Main Development Region, where El Niño's shearing effect is weaker.

Both named storms so far this season, Arthur and Bertha, fit that pattern. They formed near the U.S. coastline rather than tracking thousands of miles across the open Atlantic. Storms that develop close to shore give residents less lead time and can still produce dangerous flooding, storm surge, and wind damage even if they never reach hurricane strength.

Historically, the third named storm of the Atlantic season forms by August 3. If that benchmark holds in 2026, the next system would be named Cristobal. But with El Niño tightening its grip, even that typical milestone is no guarantee.

Eastern Pacific tells the opposite story

While the Atlantic sits largely dormant, the Eastern Pacific has been "extremely active," with El Niño doing there exactly what it prevents in the Atlantic, fueling tropical development. El Niño warms Pacific waters and reduces wind shear in that basin, creating favorable conditions for storms. The contrast between the two oceans is a textbook illustration of how a single climate pattern can produce opposite effects depending on geography.

An updated forecast from the ENSO monitoring system is expected in mid-August. That release will offer a clearer picture of just how strong El Niño is likely to become as the season approaches its September peak. If the pattern continues intensifying on its current trajectory, the suppression of Atlantic storms could persist deep into the fall, though forecasters have not ruled out the possibility that conditions shift enough for individual systems to break through.

Peak season is still ahead, and El Niño does not mean zero risk

Hurricane season runs through November 30, and the historical peak falls in September. Even the most powerful El Niño years have produced dangerous Atlantic hurricanes. El Niño reduces the odds and typically lowers the total storm count, but it does not eliminate risk, especially for Gulf Coast and Southeast residents who face the threat of close-to-shore systems that can develop quickly with little warning.

The quiet start is welcome news for communities still recovering from prior seasons. But two months of relative calm should not breed complacency. The FOX Forecast Center's own framing, identifying the Gulf and Southeast as the "greatest concern", is a reminder that the most dangerous storms for American lives and property are often the ones that form closest to home.

Nature does not care about seasonal averages. One storm in the wrong place matters more than a dozen that spin harmlessly across open water.
