AOC hits In-N-Out after brief stump for California Democrat targeting Valadao

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez paused a California campaign swing for an In-N-Out run in Delano, years after calling the chain overrated, while stumping to flip the House.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stepped off the trail Friday, stood in line with arms crossed, waved to photographers under a security detail, and walked out of an In-N-Out in Delano smiling with a red, white and yellow bag held logo-out.

The stop came right after a roughly 15-minute stump near Bakersfield for Democrat Randy Villegas, who is challenging Rep. David Valadao in a heavily Hispanic California district that President Trump carried by just 2% against Kamala Harris in 2024. The New York congresswoman is on a nationwide tour aimed at flipping the U.S. House, and the New York Post reported the burger detour as the latest roadside beat on that push.

She left the eatery with the famed West Coast bag in hand. No itemized order from the Delano counter was detailed beyond the takeout.

Fifteen minutes for Villegas, then the drive-through district

Villegas is running as a progressive against Valadao, the Republican incumbent. Democrats redrew the district after Republicans did the same in Texas and other states. Valadao has tried to put distance between himself and Trump: he voted to impeach the president in 2021, then backed Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill in 2025.

That is the race AOC chose for a short appearance before the In-N-Out stop. The visit fits a broader pattern of her barnstorming for left-wing candidates far from her own New York seat, even as moderate Democrats sideline her in some competitive contests where party leaders want a different brand.

Later Saturday she planned a Get Out the Early Vote rally in Las Vegas with Rep. Steven Horsford. Horsford’s campaign framed the Nevada push in blunt terms.

Horsford’s campaign said:

"The same forces rigging the economy against working people are betting we stay home this November. But the people who make Nevada work will never fold, we’re going all in!"

Dry fries in 2022, bag in hand in Delano

The California burger stop carries an older punchline. During the 2022 midterm cycle, AOC told Pod Save America podcaster Jon Lovett her “controversial, nonpolitical opinion” on the chain.

Ocasio-Cortez said then:

"Thank you for saying this because every time I come out here, everyone’s like: ‘Oh my god, In-N-Out, In-N-Out.’ And I’m like, my controversial, nonpolitical opinion is that it’s overrated,"

She added that the joint has “dry fries.” Friday’s photos showed none of that critique, just the smile, the security detail, and the logo facing outward for the cameras.

The contrast is simple: the same lawmaker who dismissed the chain on a podcast later made it a campaign-trail prop after a quarter-hour speech for a House challenger.

ButterBurgers in Michigan, early-vote stops next

The In-N-Out stop was not her only fast-food cameo. On a recent Michigan trip with left-wing Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, she made a first visit to Culver’s, ordered a ButterBurger and cheese curds, and declared, “My life has changed!” That swing matches the same progressive recruitment lane as when AOC told donors an El-Sayed win would prove the left can win anywhere.

From Bakersfield-area politics to Las Vegas early-vote work, the itinerary is built to put her in front of base voters and progressive hopefuls. She has also used church and rally settings elsewhere to press midterm themes, including when she rallied progressives in Syracuse on ICE and the midterms.

Campaign optics travel with costs. Separate reporting on her operation has tracked heavy outlays while small donors support the brand, including how the Ocasio-Cortez campaign racks up nearly $50,000 on luxury hotels.

Party leadership still talks up her ceiling. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has floated wide-open future lanes for her, a reminder that the same figure grabbing chain burgers on a California Friday remains central to Democratic 2028 chatter in some circles, as when Jeffries said the sky’s the limit ahead of that cycle.

Friday’s sequence was compact: short stump, In-N-Out line, wave to the cameras, bag in hand, then on toward Nevada. The tour keeps moving. The menu choices keep making the picture.

Voters can weigh a 15-minute endorsement, a redrawn district, and a smile for the fries she once called dry, and decide whether the show matches the stakes.
