A Salem High School football bus flipped on a Georgia highway late Friday, injuring at least a dozen people and putting Atlanta-area hospitals on mass-casualty standby after the team’s away game.

The crash hit just before 11 p.m. EDT on Highway 138 and Old Salem Road in Rockdale County, outside Atlanta, as the Conyers squad headed home from a Friday night contest in Norcross.

Daily Mail reporting said Georgia State Patrol confirmed the location and that the bus overturned with significant damage, one side of the roof collapsed, the front smashed, and windows broken.

Rockdale County School District told local outlets that 27 people were involved: 17 football players, seven trainers, two coaches, and one driver.

At least 12 suffered injuries. One trainer was airlifted. Ambulances carried the rest to local hospitals. Crews requested at least two medical helicopters.

Hospitals braced for a mass-casualty call

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Arthur M. Blank Hospital was notified and placed on standby. Local coverage described nearby hospitals preparing for the possibility of a mass-casualty event.

Fox 5 Atlanta reported the hospital’s posture this way:

"possibility of a mass casualty event"

Authorities described the scene as still "very active" while firefighters and ambulances worked the wreck and later turned the bus upright. Responders stayed into the early hours of Saturday. Georgia State Route 138 was shut down, and drivers were told to find other routes.

Officials appeared to set up a reunification site in a nearby parking lot so families could reconnect with the high schoolers.

Coach scrambled to track his players

Head coach Fredrick Green worked to locate where his injured players had been taken for treatment, according to Fox 5 Atlanta’s account of the night.

The team had played Greater Atlanta Christian in Norcross at 7:30 p.m. The schools sit about a 50-minute drive apart. The overturn came on the return trip through Rockdale County.

No cause for the flip was released in the available accounts. No fatalities were reported. Names and specific conditions of the injured beyond the trainer who was airlifted were not made public in the initial reporting.

What is clear is the scale of the response: a school bus full of teenagers and staff, a damaged vehicle on a busy corridor, road closures, air medical assets, and hospitals ready for the worst.

Parents waiting for word, coaches hunting hospital rooms, and first responders working past midnight are the people left to clean up the wreckage of a Friday night that should have ended with a bus ride home.
