Jenna Bush Hager told Al Roker he was out of line for calling her “Big Red” on the Today set, and her co-hosts quickly joined the sensitivity lecture.

Bush Hager walked onto the set in red earlier this week, on a Tuesday episode of the morning show. Roker greeted her with a nickname that would not survive the week.

By Thursday, on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle, she was still talking about it, and making clear the line she thought he had crossed. Page Six reported the on-air recap.

“Earlier this week when I was wearing red... remember this? And I walked onto the set and Al goes, ‘Hey, Big Red!’” Bush Hager said.

"You can’t call somebody, a woman ‘big!’"

She added she was thinking, “Not okay!” Co-host Sheinelle Jones backed her up and filled in the rest of the room’s reaction.

Co-hosts rush to police the greeting

Jones said Savannah Guthrie was stunned in the moment.

"Oh my God, I can’t believe you said that,"

That was Guthrie’s reaction, as Jones recalled it. When Roker asked what he had done wrong, Jones had a ready rule.

"And I said, ‘You can’t say anything that takes up space!’"

Jones even offered what she cast as a safer alternative: “Skinny Red!” Roker, trying to smooth it over, floated options of his own, including “Tall Red.”

A grown man said a playful nickname to a colleague in a red outfit. The workplace response was a group tutorial on forbidden words.

Body-image history enters the segment

The Thursday discussion did not stop at the nickname. Coverage tied the flap to Bush Hager’s longer public account of body-image struggles, which she has said reached back to age 9.

In 2023 remarks resurfaced with the story, she said that chapter had closed. “I no longer think that way and I haven’t for quite some time,” she said then. Having children, she argued, reset how she saw her body, “so much more than a vessel to be made fun of, to be worrying about.” She also described finding an old journal over a Christmas break in which her fourth-grade New Year’s resolution was to lose 5 pounds, a memory that hit harder once her eldest, Mila, reached the same grade.

Bush Hager and husband Henry Hager share three children: Mila, 13; Poppy, 11; and Hal, 7. She is a longtime Today host and the daughter of former President George W. Bush, a familiar face who now helps set the tone on one of network television’s biggest morning franchises.

None of that personal history turns “Big Red” into a slur. It does show how fast a light on-set ribbing becomes a language seminar when the cultural script says any word about size is radioactive.

A nickname meets the new workplace code

Roker’s offense, as framed on air, was not malice. It was using the word “big” about a woman. Jones’s fix was to ban anything that “takes up space.” Guthrie’s reaction, as retold, treated the greeting like a breach.

That is the point worth sitting with. Morning-show banter used to survive a nickname. Now the safe move is a committee-approved substitute, “Skinny Red,” “Tall Red,” anything but the plain word that described the outfit and the joke.

Viewers can decide whether a colleague’s red dress justified a multi-day correction session. What the segment made plain is the incentive structure: when “big” is treated as untouchable, everyone learns to talk smaller.

Common sense still recognizes a throwaway greeting. Network culture increasingly does not.
