Julia Stiles honors Heath Ledger with emotional Dedication Night routine

Julia Stiles honored Heath Ledger with a barefoot contemporary routine on "Dancing with the Stars," as her "10 Things I Hate About You" castmates joined her onstage.

Julia Stiles and partner Ezra Sosa turned Dedication Night into a memorial for Heath Ledger, her late costar from the 1999 teen rom-com that launched them both. The pair danced a stripped-down contemporary number Tuesday as candles ringed the stage and the film’s surviving cast stepped out to meet them at center.

USA TODAY reported that the routine earned a 36 out of 40, Stiles and Sosa’s strongest score of the season, and left more than one judge openly moved.

Barefoot routine, blue dress, and a rose for Ledger

Stiles performed barefoot in a flowing blue dress to “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” the song tied to the film’s most familiar scene. After the dance, she took a rose and watched a clip from the movie as the tribute shifted from movement to memory.

She did not dress the moment up. She named what she took from working with Ledger when they were both young and suddenly famous.

Stiles said:

"I learned so much from Heath. He was so authentic,"

She added that the work came naturally.

"It was so easy with him."

Ledger died in 2008 at 28 from an accidental drug overdose. The film that bound him to Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and the rest of that young cast had already become a lasting piece of late-’90s pop culture. Nearly two decades later, Dedication Night put that history back under bright lights.

Castmates return to center stage

When the music stopped, the reunion was not a cameo in the wings. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gabrielle Union, Larisa Oleynik, Andrew Keegan, and Susan May Pratt joined Stiles on center stage. The show framed the gathering as a full-circle beat for a movie that still follows its stars around.

It also landed one week after a separate “Save the Last Dance” mini-reunion connected to Stiles, another reminder that her early roles keep finding her in public.

Guest judge Kym Johnson called the number nostalgic and clean in its purpose.

Johnson said:

"This was so nostalgic,"

She also called it “a gorgeous dedication to him.”

Judges call the tribute healing

Carrie Ann Inaba cried. She described the dance as an “expression of the soul” and went further on what it did in the room.

Inaba said:

"That was so healing."

Bruno Tonioli kept it short and direct: “A wonderful tribute. Well done.” Derek Hough said the performance “will last forever.”

The panel’s score of 36 out of 40 matched the tone, not a pity vote, a strong mark for a contemporary routine built around memory rather than flash. In a season full of costume changes and big production, Stiles and Sosa went the other way: bare feet, candles, a film clip, and the people who actually shared that set with Ledger.

Ledger’s best work always read as lived-in rather than polished for the camera. Stiles’s tribute stayed in that lane. She did not turn a dead friend into a branding exercise. She danced, said he was authentic, and let the cast stand there with her. That is rarer on network television than it should be, and clearer than any speech about “legacy.”
