Las Vegas authorities have identified skeletal remains found in a barrel at Lake Mead as Edward Jackson, a suspected homicide victim shot decades ago when drought exposed the long-hidden body.

Clark County Coroner Melanie Rouse announced Thursday that the remains belong to Edward Jackson, who died from a gunshot wound. Las Vegas police say the homicide likely happened in the early 1980s.

Boaters found the rusted metal barrel on May 1, 2022, at Lake Mead’s Hemenway Harbor near Boulder City, Nevada. Historically low water levels had left the shoreline exposed. Four years later, officials finally put a name to the victim.

FOX Weather reported that Jackson was believed to be in his mid-to-late 50s when he died. He was originally from Arkansas, had lived in California and Utah, and had a criminal history in those states. Authorities said he had no known ties to Las Vegas.

Police place the killing in the early 1980s

Las Vegas Police Lt. Robert Price laid out what investigators believe about the timeline.

"Edward was last seen visiting [his family] in Arkansas in the early 80s, which aligns with our belief that the homicide occurred sometime in the early 80s,"

Price said. That last sighting matches the condition of the remains and the four-decade span police cited when the barrel first surfaced.

Investigators found no information supporting organized-crime theories that circulated after the discovery. No arrests or charges have been announced.

Drought dropped the water and revealed the barrel

Lake Mead’s water levels had fallen to their lowest point since 1937. Over the two decades before the 2022 find, the reservoir dropped about 150 feet. That decline left old shoreline bare and pulled long-sunk objects into view.

Bronson Mack of the Southern Nevada Water Authority described the scale of the drop.

"It’s a significant decline that we have seen in the levels of Lake Mead,"

Mack said. He also pointed to conservation work underway at the time.

"Today, Southern Nevada supplies more people with less water than we did two decades ago, but conservation continues to be key for the entire Colorado River users,"

Mack told FOX Weather. Conservation measures in 2022 helped cut water demand by 26 percent.

The day after the discovery, police noted that the worsening drought had revealed a body dumped roughly four decades earlier and warned that falling water could uncover more remains.

A cold case now has a name, not a suspect

Jackson traveled various parts of the country before he vanished from his family’s view in Arkansas. Records placed him in California and Utah with a criminal history there. Beyond that outline, the public file is thin. Officials have not released a full date of birth, detailed rap sheet, or the forensic steps that confirmed identity and the gunshot wound after four years in the barrel.

The barrel sat in the Lake Mead Marina area long enough for corrosion to set in. Boaters came across it in early May 2022. Photos from the following days showed the exposed shoreline at Boulder City. Identification came only after the long wait that followed.

For now the case sits with a named victim, a cause of death, and a believed decade for the crime. It does not yet sit with a defendant.

When water levels fall and old crimes surface, the least the system can do is put a name on the victim and keep working the file until someone answers for the gunshot.
