An armed bystander killed a teenage gunman and ended a deadly Bend, Oregon, elementary school shooting, yet Democratic senators still pressed Congress for more gun control.
A 16-year-old former student opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, killing three children and a teacher before an armed community member followed him inside and shot him dead. Two others were critically hurt. Democratic senators then took to X to urge new federal gun restrictions, even though a private citizen with a firearm stopped the attack.
Breitbart News reported that Sens. Elizabeth Warren, Tammy Duckworth, Patty Murray, Mark Kelly, and Cory Booker posted after the shooting and called on Congress to act on gun control. The piece noted the contrast: the rampage ended because an armed citizen killed the attacker.
CBS News, cited in that reporting, stated the suspect “was shot and killed by a bystander.”
The gunman, identified as 16-year-old John J. Griffin II, used his mother’s pump-action shotgun. How he got the weapon remains unclear. He had previously attended the school.
The New York Post reported that a bystander father shot Griffin dead before police arrived. Authorities later searched the family home for motive clues. Parents have been cooperating.
Victims included children ages 5, 8, and 11, plus a teacher. A 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were critically injured. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz confirmed the ages of those killed.
The Washington Examiner reported four dead, including three children, and said a community member followed the gunman inside and stopped him.
First 911 traffic came at 12:59 p.m. Officers reached the scene within about three minutes, according to additional reporting. By then the armed bystander had already ended the threat.
"Today has been the worst day of my life. My son Rhoam was killed in a school shooting. We are broken and lost, but are surrounded by friends and family who are keeping us safe."
That statement came from Kelik Summer, father of one of the child victims.
While families mourned and investigators worked the scene, several Democrats framed the answer as fresh federal gun laws. Fox News reported renewed calls from Oregon officials and other Democrats after details emerged that the attacker used his mother’s shotgun.
Sen. Ron Wyden put it this way:
"The best way to honor these victims is to at long last pass common-sense gun laws that reduce the risks of more children, parents, teachers and staff forced to live in fear of similar nightmares for their schools."
Rep. Janelle Bynum asked when lawmakers would “step up and say enough of killing our babies” and argued for ensuring “people who should not have firearms don’t have them.” Other Democrats, including Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, echoed demands for what they called common-sense gun laws and safer schools.
Warren, Duckworth, Murray, Kelly, who posted with his wife beside him, and Booker likewise pressed Congress for more gun-control action in the wake of the Bend attack. Their posts, described in the Breitbart account, did not center the fact that an armed citizen halted the killing.
Griffin entered with a long gun. The bystander saw him, came in behind him, and shot him dead. Four people had already been killed. The suspect died at the scene. No arrest followed because the attacker was already down.
Lawful armed intervention shortened the attack. Police response was measured in minutes, not a vacuum. The weapon came from the suspect’s mother; the transfer path to the 16-year-old is still unknown.
None of that stopped the immediate political turn toward broader federal limits on law-abiding gun owners. The senators named above treated new statutes as the necessary next step, even after a bystander with a gun did what distant legislation could not do in the moment: stop the shooter.
School shootings demand clear facts, honest timelines, and policies that match how attacks actually end. In Bend, an armed citizen ended this one. Democratic senators answered with another push for gun control anyway.
