Atlantic hurricane season hits a 60-year low — and El Niño is the reason

The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season has produced zero hurricanes through mid-September, the longest such drought since modern tracking began in 1966, a record driven by a powerful El Niño that forecasters predicted months ago.

Five named tropical storms, Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal, Dolly, and Edouard, have spun up in the Atlantic basin since the season opened June 1. But none crossed the 74-mph wind threshold that separates a tropical storm from a hurricane. As of September 15, the Atlantic remains hurricane-free for the first time in at least six decades, CBS News reported.

The previous record for the latest first hurricane belonged to September 11, the date Gustav formed in 2002 and Humberto formed in 2013. The 2026 season has now blown past that mark by four days and counting, with no hurricane formation in sight.

El Niño did exactly what forecasters said it would

NOAA's Climate Prediction Center laid out the case before the season even started. Its annual outlook called for below-normal activity: seven to 13 named storms, two to six hurricanes, and zero to two major hurricanes, those rated Category 3 or stronger. The prediction rested on one dominant factor: El Niño was strengthening and showed no sign of letting up.

El Niño is a warming pattern in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. When it intensifies, it cools Atlantic sea surface temperatures and ramps up vertical wind shear, strong, shifting upper-level winds that tear apart tropical storms before they can organize into hurricanes. The Climate Prediction Center warned that El Niño was set to deepen throughout the season, including during the August-through-October window when Atlantic hurricane activity normally peaks.

So far, the forecast has been vindicated on the low end. Five storms earned names, a tropical storm gets its name when winds hit 39 mph, but the hostile atmospheric conditions kept every one of them from reaching hurricane strength.

Every strong El Niño since 1950 suppressed Atlantic hurricanes

The 2026 season is not an anomaly in El Niño years. NOAA data going back to 1950 shows that every similarly strong El Niño event coincided with near or below-average Atlantic hurricane seasons. The pattern is consistent enough that forecasters treated a quiet season as the baseline expectation, not a surprise.

National Hurricane Center climate data collected between 1991 and 2020 shows the average first named storm of a season forms near its June 1 start, while the first hurricane typically develops in early or mid-August. The 2026 season hit its named-storm benchmarks on schedule but has not come close to producing a hurricane.

For comparison, 2022's first Atlantic hurricane, Danielle, did not form until September 2, a late start that drew attention at the time. But even that season managed to produce a hurricane weeks before the point the 2026 season has now reached.

Pacific storms surge while the Atlantic stays flat

El Niño's effect is not a net reduction in global storm activity. It redirects energy. The same warmer waters and weaker wind shear that suppress Atlantic hurricanes fuel tropical cyclone development in the eastern Pacific. The Atlantic's loss is the Pacific's gain, a tradeoff that plays out every time El Niño reaches significant strength.

NOAA considers 1966 the start of modern storm tracking because that year marked the onset of satellite surveillance capable of reliably detecting and monitoring tropical systems across the open ocean. Any comparison before that date carries an asterisk, storms that formed far from land or shipping lanes before the satellite era may have gone undetected entirely. The 60-year record, then, covers the full span of data that scientists consider trustworthy.

The record silence in the Atlantic does not mean the season is over. October can still produce hurricanes, and late-season storms have historically been among the most dangerous. But the window is narrowing, and the same El Niño conditions that have kept the basin quiet show no sign of weakening.

What the quiet season does, and does not, prove

A single quiet hurricane season does not settle any broader debate about long-term storm trends. What it does demonstrate is that established climate patterns, El Niño chief among them, still drive seasonal outcomes in ways that are measurable, predictable, and well within historical norms. NOAA's Climate Prediction Center made a straightforward forecast based on observable ocean temperatures and atmospheric conditions. The atmosphere cooperated.

That is worth noting in an era when every weather event gets conscripted into political arguments. A historically strong El Niño produced a historically quiet Atlantic hurricane season. The mechanism is well understood. The data goes back decades. The forecast matched reality.

Coastal residents from Texas to the Carolinas have reason to be grateful for the reprieve, and reason to stay cautious. The season runs through November 30, and a historic El Niño carries consequences well beyond hurricane season, including potential disruptions to winter weather patterns across the South.

Sometimes the most important weather story is the disaster that did not happen, and the straightforward science that explained why it wouldn't.
