Artemis II crew fires engine, commits to lunar trajectory in first crewed deep-space flight since 1972

NASA's Artemis II crew fired the Orion spacecraft's main engine Thursday evening, completing a translunar injection burn that sent four astronauts out of Earth orbit and onto a path toward the moon, the first time humans have left low-Earth orbit in more than fifty years.

The burn lasted five minutes and fifty seconds, beginning at 7:49 p.m. EDT. It accelerated Orion to roughly 22,000 miles per hour and placed the capsule on a four-day course through cislunar space toward a close flyby of the lunar surface. With that single maneuver, the mission crossed from test orbit into genuine deep-space travel.

It is a moment worth marking plainly: American astronauts are heading for the moon again. The last crew to do so, Apollo 17, splashed down in December 1972. What followed was half a century of manned spaceflight confined to low-Earth orbit. Thursday's burn ended that drought.

The burn and what it means

Before the translunar injection, the crew completed a perigee raise burn to position Orion in the correct orbital geometry. Fox News Digital reported that NASA described the resulting flight path as a "free-return trajectory", a course that loops around the moon and naturally brings the spacecraft back toward Earth without requiring additional major propulsion.

That design is a safety measure. If something goes wrong on the far side of the moon, the crew does not need a second large engine firing to come home. Gravity does the work.

Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen radioed mission control shortly after the burn. His words carried the weight of the moment without overselling it:

"With that successful TLI, the crew's feeling pretty good up here on our way to the moon, and we just wanted to communicate to everyone around the planet who's worked to make Artemis possible that we firmly felt the power of your perseverance during every second of that burn."

Hansen added a broader note, as the crew described tense moments aboard Orion during the mission's most consequential maneuver:

"Humanity has once again shown what we are capable of, and it's your hopes for the future that carry us now on this journey around the moon."

How the crew got here

The four-person crew, commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, and mission specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen, lifted off Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. from Launch Complex 39B at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard NASA's Space Launch System rocket.

Their first full day in orbit was spent testing Orion's systems and maneuverability while adjusting the capsule's highly elliptical orbit for the lunar trajectory. Lead Flight Director Jeff Radigan told the crew that NASA's mission management team had formally cleared them to leave Earth orbit.

"We are go for the [trans-lunar injection] after the [mission management team] concluded their deliberations a few minutes ago, and we're going to proceed down that path and get ready for the burn here."

Hansen's reply was simple: "We love those words. And we're loving the view."

Orion Program Manager Howard Hu said the spacecraft responded strongly to astronaut input during crew-guided maneuvers. He singled out pilot Victor Glover, saying Glover "did exactly what he needed to do."

What comes next

Orion will spend the next several days traveling toward the moon. NASA plans a series of smaller trajectory correction maneuvers, minor thruster firings, to keep the spacecraft on course. When Orion approaches the moon, it will enter the lunar sphere of influence and swing around the far side before beginning its return journey.

The New York Post reported the mission is expected to pass within roughly 4,000 miles of the lunar surface and could set a new human distance-from-Earth record near 250,000 miles. The moon's gravity will then slingshot the capsule back toward Earth for a planned splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, capping a roughly 685,000-mile flight.

The total mission duration is approximately ten days, as NASA outlined before launch. It is designed as a systems and operations test, proving that Orion and its life-support, navigation, and communications hardware can keep astronauts alive and on course in deep space.

NASA has described Orion as the most powerful spacecraft it has built for human spaceflight. The agency's broader Artemis program aims to establish a long-term human presence on the moon and lay the groundwork for eventual missions to Mars. Future missions are planned to return astronauts to the lunar surface itself, something Artemis II will not attempt.

A milestone worth defending

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman framed the burn in blunt terms. Breitbart reported his statement: "America is back in the business of sending astronauts to the moon. This time, farther than ever before."

That line deserves to be taken seriously. For years, the Artemis program endured delays, cost overruns, and skepticism from critics who questioned whether NASA could execute a crewed lunar mission at all. The buildup to launch night was itself a long road. Wednesday's liftoff and Thursday's burn answered the loudest doubts with hardware and fire.

The crew is international, three Americans and one Canadian, and the mission carries a cooperative spirit that serves American interests well. But the rocket, the capsule, and the mission architecture are American. Kennedy Space Center is American soil. The taxpayers who funded this program deserve to see it succeed, and so far it is succeeding.

There are still days of deep-space travel ahead, a lunar flyby that has to go right, and a re-entry that has to hold. Minor onboard issues have already required attention, and the hardest parts of the flight are still coming. But the trajectory is set, the crew is healthy, and the spacecraft is performing.

Open questions

Several things remain to be seen. Will the smaller correction burns keep Orion precisely on course? Will the close lunar flyby, within 4,000 miles of the surface, go as planned? And will the heat shield and re-entry systems, tested on the uncrewed Artemis I mission, hold up with four lives aboard?

The Washington Examiner noted that NASA officials confirmed this is the first time humans have escaped Earth orbit since 1972. That fact alone underscores the stakes. Every system aboard Orion is being tested in an environment no crewed spacecraft has entered in half a century.

None of this is routine. None of it should be treated as routine. The men and women aboard Orion are farther from home than any living astronaut has been, and they are getting farther every hour.

America built the rocket, trained the crew, and lit the engine. Now the country waits, and for the first time in a generation, the wait is for astronauts heading toward the moon, not just circling the Earth.
