Artemis II toilet malfunction fixed overnight as NASA's moonbound crew presses on

The first crewed lunar mission in more than half a century hit an unglamorous snag Wednesday evening when the Orion capsule's toilet stopped working almost the moment the Artemis II crew reached orbit. Mission Control walked astronaut Christina Koch through a series of troubleshooting steps overnight, and by Thursday the commode was back in service, but the episode raised fresh questions about hardware readiness on a spacecraft NASA is counting on to return Americans to the moon.

Until the fix took hold, the four-person crew, three Americans and one Canadian, had to rely on a bag-and-funnel system for urinating. Not exactly the image NASA wanted to project on a mission cleared for launch with enormous fanfare and billed as the gateway to a 2028 moon landing.

The crew remained on track to leave Earth orbit Thursday night for a lunar fly-around, the first translunar injection since Apollo's final flight in 1972, with a Pacific splashdown scheduled for April 10. But the toilet trouble, paired with a cabin that was colder than expected, offered an early reminder that spaceflight hardware does not always cooperate with the press releases.

What went wrong inside Orion

NASA spokesperson Gary Jordan described the malfunction during live mission commentary. As the New York Post reported, Koch flagged the problem shortly after launch: the toilet's fan was jammed. NASA traced the fault to a controller issue. The system could still handle fecal waste, but urine collection was knocked offline.

The fan does more than move air through the plumbing. Inside Orion's compact cabin, it removes odor and airborne particles, a function that matters a great deal when four people are sealed in a capsule for days. Breitbart noted that the crew reported a blinking fault light tied to the toilet system before the apogee raise burn, and that a backup waste-collection system stood ready if the repair failed.

Flight controllers in Houston walked Koch through the fix. The toilet uses air suction instead of water and gravity, a design constraint that makes field repairs trickier than anything a homeowner faces. Koch applied what Mission Control called "some plumbing tricks," and the system came back online.

Capcom Amy Dill radioed the good news back to the crew: "Happy to report that toilet is go for use."

A cold capsule and a familiar design flaw

The toilet was not the crew's only comfort problem. The Orion capsule's interior sat at about 65 degrees Fahrenheit, roughly 18 degrees Celsius, and Mission Control was working to warm it up. For a crew that still had days of flight ahead, including the high-stakes translunar burn, a chilly cabin adds fatigue to an already demanding schedule.

The commode itself is based on an experimental design that launched to the International Space Station in 2020. That station toilet, S1 notes, has been out of order for years. Sending a derivative of a known problem child on a flagship lunar mission is the kind of decision that deserves scrutiny, especially when NASA is asking taxpayers to trust that the Artemis program is ready for prime time.

The Associated Press reported that NASA may need design tweaks for Orion's toilet before future Artemis moon-landing missions, even as Artemis II itself remained on schedule. What those tweaks would look like, or how much they would cost, has not been disclosed.

Koch keeps her composure

If the plumbing ordeal rattled Koch, she did not show it. After the fix, she told Mission Control the crew could make out entire coastlines of continents and the South Pole from orbit.

Koch radioed simply:

"It is just absolutely phenomenal."

Before joining NASA, Koch spent a year at an Antarctic research station, the kind of posting that presumably builds tolerance for cramped quarters and unreliable infrastructure. That experience may have come in handy Wednesday night.

Bigger stakes than a broken toilet

NASA has framed Artemis II as the test flight that will "kickstart the entire Artemis program" and lead to a moon landing by two astronauts in 2028. The agency has endured years of delays, cost overruns, and technical setbacks to reach this point. Hydrogen leak issues forced earlier postponements, and every new glitch, no matter how minor, feeds a legitimate question: is the hardware truly ready?

Six surviving Apollo astronauts are still alive to watch this chapter unfold. The last time Mission Control executed a translunar injection was 1972, when Apollo 17 closed out the original lunar program. More than five decades later, the nation is attempting to reclaim that capability with a spacecraft whose toilet failed on day one.

None of this means the mission is doomed. The crew is pressing ahead. The toilet works. The burn is on schedule. But NASA's credibility rests on execution, not ambition, and a mission sold as historic cannot afford to keep stumbling over problems that were foreseeable.

Taxpayers who fund this program deserve hardware that works before it leaves the launchpad, not workarounds improvised in orbit.
