Authorities rushed to the scene in Tarzana after receiving a 911 call Wednesday morning. Police said Handy was found unconscious in the front yard with a stab wound to the chest.
When officers arrived and began searching near the Erwin Street home, Gledhill walked up and flagged them down. He told police he was the person they were looking for, the LAPD said.
The 911 call itself was disturbing. A caller told dispatchers: "I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin." Gledhill also reportedly said, "I just killed the man." LAPD said Gledhill confessed to carrying out the fatal attack and told detectives he was the one who had phoned police.
Surveillance video obtained by KTTV, an LA Fox affiliate, from a neighbor's home showed a suspect walking back and forth on the sidewalk near the scene, an image The U.S. Sun described as the suspect casually walking away after the attack.
Neighbors told reporters they had heard Gledhill and Handy arguing overnight before the stabbing.
The picture that emerged from people who lived near the Tarzana home was not a flattering one. The New York Post reported that neighbors described Michael Gledhill as sometimes bizarre and paranoid, with at least one neighbor suggesting he may have struggled with mental health issues.
