Twelve dead after skydiving plane crashes on takeoff near Butler, Missouri

A single-engine turboprop carrying eleven skydivers and one pilot crashed moments after takeoff from Butler Memorial Airport in Missouri on Sunday, killing everyone on board in what local officials called a mass casualty event roughly 65 miles south of Kansas City.

The plane, a Pacific Aerospace 750XL operated by Skydive Kansas City, went down around 11:30 a.m. in a field adjacent to the airport. It struck the ground nose-first and caught fire, leaving a heap of mangled blue and silver metal in the grass and drawing a massive lineup of emergency vehicles to a nearby street.

No survivors have been reported. Federal investigators from both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board responded to the scene. And some of the victims' own family members watched it happen.

What witnesses and officials described

Dennis Jacobs, the acting airport manager and director of the Bates County Emergency Management Agency, offered the most detailed public account of what went wrong. He told the Associated Press that the aircraft had barely left the ground before trouble began.

"It had just taken off and made a left turn. In my opinion, I think it was losing power, and he was trying to make it over to the highway and land, and he stalled and went down nose first and caught fire."

Jacobs' description, a left turn, apparent power loss, a failed attempt to reach a highway for an emergency landing, and then a stall, sketches the outline of a catastrophe that unfolded in seconds. The aircraft had only just become airborne. It was too low to establish contact with air traffic controllers before the accident occurred.

Bates County Sheriff Chad Anderson confirmed that FAA officials rushed to the scene Sunday afternoon. He also said something no family should ever have to endure: some of the occupants' relatives were present and witnessed the crash.

Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt. Justin Ewing, as the Washington Examiner reported, described the crash scene in a single word: "brutal."

The aircraft and the operation

The Pacific Aerospace 750XL is a single-engine turboprop commonly used for skydiving operations. It can carry a full load of jumpers to altitude quickly and is a workhorse at drop zones across the country. Skydive Kansas City operated the aircraft out of Butler Memorial Airport, a small facility in the rural stretch between Kansas City and the Missouri-Arkansas border.

Butler itself is a town of modest size. Its airport handles general aviation traffic, not commercial flights. A skydiving operation launching from a field like this is routine in the sport. What is not routine is a full aircraft going down on takeoff with no chance for anyone on board to bail out or for the pilot to recover.

The Federal Aviation Administration told Fox News Digital that "a Pacific Aerospace P750 crashed while departing from Butler Memorial Airport in Missouri around 11:35 a.m. local time on Sunday, June 14." Fox News also reported that the NTSB will lead the investigation, with the FAA assisting.

Twelve lives lost in seconds

The names and ages of the twelve people killed have not been publicly released. Officials were working Sunday afternoon to identify all victims and notify next of kin. Clergy and volunteers went to the site to assist grieving relatives, including those who had come to the airport expecting to watch their loved ones jump from a plane and land safely, not to witness a fireball in a field.

Newsmax confirmed the crash killed the pilot and eleven passengers who had boarded for a skydiving trip, and that the plane was engulfed in flames after crashing in the adjacent field.

The sheer death toll, twelve, makes this one of the deadliest general-aviation accidents in recent memory. Skydiving crashes do happen, but they typically involve smaller groups, parachute malfunctions at altitude, or hard landings. A fully loaded jump plane crashing on takeoff with zero survivors is a different order of catastrophe.

Investigation ahead

The NTSB and FAA face a long investigative road. A preliminary report from the NTSB typically arrives within weeks, but a final determination of probable cause can take a year or more. Key questions remain wide open.

Was the engine producing full power at takeoff? Did the pilot report any mechanical issue before departure? What was the aircraft's maintenance history? Was the plane loaded within its weight-and-balance limits? Did weather play any role? None of these answers are available yet.

Jacobs' account, that the pilot appeared to lose power and attempted to divert to a highway, is consistent with a classic takeoff emergency in which a pilot, too low to return to the runway, tries to find any flat surface ahead. At low altitude, the margin for error vanishes. A stall at that height is almost always fatal.

The aircraft's registration number has not been disclosed publicly. Nor has any prior incident history for the specific airframe or for Skydive Kansas City's fleet been released. Those details will matter as investigators reconstruct what happened in the final seconds of the flight.

A community in grief

Butler, Missouri, is a small community. As Breitbart reported, the scene at the airport Sunday was one of wreckage, emergency response, and families confronting the worst possible outcome of what should have been an afternoon of recreation. The skydivers boarded that plane expecting a thrill. The pilot climbed into the cockpit expecting a routine flight to jump altitude.

Instead, twelve people are dead, a field next to a small-town airport is a crash site, and federal investigators are sifting through charred metal for answers.

The families of those twelve deserve a thorough, honest accounting of what went wrong, and they deserve it without delay. When people trust their lives to an aircraft and an operator, the system that certifies, inspects, and oversees that operation owes them nothing less.
