Trump threatens to federalize DC amid violent crime wave

President Donald Trump is fed up with Washington, D.C.’s spiraling crime. This week, he announced bold plans to potentially take federal control of the city’s Metropolitan Police Department, as NBC News reports. This isn’t just talk -- it’s a direct challenge to the progressive policies, letting chaos fester in the nation’s capital.

Trump’s latest move follows a vicious assault on Edward Coristine, a former Department of Government Efficiency staffer, over the weekend. The president first hinted at federal intervention on Tuesday, before doubling down the next day at a White House event. D.C.’s leadership, predictably, has no response.

The assault on Coristine sparked Trump’s ire, prompting him to call D.C.’s crime rate “ridiculous.” He’s not wrong -- muggings and violence have tarnished the capital’s image. Yet, Mayor Muriel Bowser’s team stayed silent, dodging accountability as usual.

Trump eyes federal takeover

“We’re considering it,” Trump said later in the week, when asked about seizing control of D.C.’s police. That’s not just a soundbite -- it’s a warning to woke city officials who’ve let lawlessness slide. A federal takeover could happen fast, though experts say it needs a “justifying emergency.”

Legal challenges are likely, but Trump’s no stranger to pushing boundaries. He’s floated deploying the National Guard to D.C., a tactic he used in 2020 during the George Floyd protests. Back then, Bowser whined, but the Guard restored order.

Trump’s frustration isn’t new -- he has long wanted more control over D.C.’s governance. The city’s limited self-rule, shackled by congressional oversight, gives him leverage. Progressives clutching their pearls over “democracy” might want to check D.C.’s crime stats first.

National Guard deployment looming?

“We have a capital that’s very unsafe,” Trump declared, referencing Coristine’s brutal attack. He’s right -- a “beautiful, handsome guy” nearly lost his life to D.C.’s street violence. The president’s not here to coddle criminals or their enablers.

Trump’s National Guard threat isn’t just bluster. Two months ago, he sent the Guard to Los Angeles to quell immigration protests, sparking legal fights. D.C.’s leaders should take note: Trump doesn’t bluff when public safety’s on the line.

Interestingly, D.C.’s police data claims violent crime dropped 26% in 2025. Sounds nice, but tell that to Coristine and countless others mugged or worse. Numbers don’t mean much when the streets still feel like a war zone.

Bowser’s silence speaks volumes

Mayor Bowser’s spokesperson had nothing to say about Trump’s plans. Typical -- when the going gets tough, D.C.’s liberal elite duck for cover. Their silence only fuels the case for federal intervention.

Trump’s 2020 National Guard deployment showed he’s willing to act when local leaders fail. Bowser opposed it then, but the results spoke for themselves—order was restored. History might repeat itself if D.C.’s leaders keep ignoring the crime crisis.

A full federal takeover of D.C. would need Congress to repeal the 1973 Home Rule Act. That’s a tall order, requiring votes in both the House and Senate. But Trump’s not one to shy away from a fight, especially when it’s about law and order.

Crime crisis demands action

“What a shame, rate of crime,” Trump lamented, vowing not to let muggings and killings continue unchecked. His passion for a safer capital resonates with anyone tired of progressive excuses. D.C.’s residents deserve better than platitudes.

Jeanine Pirro, U.S. attorney for Washington, backed Trump’s resolve. “It’s up to the president,” she said, endorsing whatever it takes to clean up D.C. That’s the kind of no-nonsense support the capital needs right now.

Trump’s eyeing a swift, decisive response to D.C.’s crime wave. Whether it’s federalizing the police or calling in the National Guard, he’s ready to act. The left may cry foul, but law-abiding citizens will cheer a capital free from fear.
