Trump issues Sunday ultimatum for Hamas to accept Gaza peace deal

President Donald Trump just dropped a diplomatic bombshell on Hamas, setting a hard deadline for peace in Gaza by Sunday evening, as the Associated Press reports.

Trump, alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, unveiled a plan this week to end the nearly two-year conflict that erupted after Hamas’ brutal attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, with a deal involving hostage releases, a ceasefire, and international oversight of Gaza.

Let’s rewind to the start of this mess: nearly two years ago, Hamas launched a vicious assault on Israeli army bases, farming communities, and even an outdoor music festival, leaving around 1,200 dead -- mostly civilians -- and abducting 251 others.

Devastation follows Hamas’ initial attack

Israel’s response was swift and unrelenting, with a retaliatory offensive that Gaza’s Health Ministry -- run by Hamas but deemed reliable by the U.N. -- says has claimed over 66,000 Palestinian lives, roughly half of them reportedly women and children.

The fallout in Gaza, if data is accurate, is nothing short of catastrophic, with 90% of its 2 million people displaced, often repeatedly, and much of the territory reduced to rubble, rendering it largely uninhabitable.

Gaza City, in particular, descended into famine before Israel launched a major offensive to occupy it, prompting an estimated 400,000 to flee in recent weeks, though hundreds of thousands still remain trapped.

Trump’s bold plan for peace

Fast forward to this week, and Trump steps in with a plan that demands Hamas release the remaining 48 hostages -- about 20 believed to still be alive -- while disarming and relinquishing power in Gaza.

In exchange, Israel would cease its offensive, pull back from much of Gaza, free hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, and greenlight humanitarian aid and reconstruction efforts, though plans to relocate Gazans abroad have been scrapped.

Here’s the kicker: Gaza would fall under international governance led by Trump and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, with no path outlined for reuniting with the West Bank for a Palestinian state -- a bitter pill for those dreaming of progressive unity schemes.

Trump’s ultimatum shakes table

Trump didn’t mince words on social media, declaring, “An Agreement must be reached with Hamas by Sunday Evening at SIX P.M.”

That’s not just a deadline; it’s a warning shot, as he added that if this “LAST CHANCE” deal flops, an unprecedented military storm awaits Hamas, promising “PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST ONE WAY OR THE OTHER.”

Call it tough love, but this isn’t about coddling terrorists -- it’s about ending a war that’s bled both sides dry, even if Hamas’ lingering influence and sporadic attacks on Israeli soldiers suggest they’re not ready to wave the white flag.

Humanitarian crisis deepens

Meanwhile, the human toll mounts, with U.N. spokesperson Olga Cherevko painting a grim picture to the Associated Press, noting families -- some with young children or pregnant women -- can’t even afford to flee south.

Israel’s earlier moves, like sealing off Gaza from food and medicine for over two months after ending a ceasefire in March, have only deepened the misery, critics say, while large swaths of territory have been seized and flattened.

Netanyahu remains unyielding, rejecting Hamas’ demands for a permanent ceasefire and full withdrawal, instead insisting on their total surrender -- a stance backed by both the Biden and Trump administrations and garnerning military and diplomatic support, showing where America stands on appeasing terror groups.
