Trump deploys 400 Texas National Guard troops to Illinois amid anti-ICE clashes

President Donald Trump has just dropped a bombshell decision, sending 400 Texas National Guard troops to Illinois and other states as anti-ICE protests spiral into chaos.

In a nutshell, Trump’s deployment aims to quell escalating violence in blue cities like Chicago and Portland, where federal agents face off against protesters, while Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker slams the move as an overreach of federal power, as the New York Post reports.

This saga kicked off with unrest brewing in Chicago since September, fueled by a surge of demonstrations against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement policies. The city has become a flashpoint, especially with ICE’s latest operation targeting criminal unauthorized migrants.

Operation Midway Blitz sparks Dem fury

Last month, ICE launched “Operation Midway Blitz,” a targeted initiative to apprehend criminal unauthorized migrants in Chicago, drawn there by what federal officials call the state’s sanctuary policies. Local leaders, including Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, have pushed back hard against the operation.

Protests in Chicago have turned ugly, with demonstrators reportedly using vehicles to target ICE agents in recent days. According to the Department of Homeland Security, agents faced such attacks twice in a single day earlier this week.

On Saturday, U.S. Border Patrol agents on Chicago’s South Side opened fire, wounding an armed woman during an ambush by an angry mob. The incident unfolded just 15 miles from an ICE processing center in Broadview, a hotspot for ongoing civil unrest.

Tensions escalate in Broadview

The Broadview ICE center has seen more than a dozen arrests since Friday, as clashes between protesters and federal forces intensify. It’s ground zero for the anti-ICE movement in the area, and the tension shows no sign of cooling.

Meanwhile, Trump had already mobilized 300 California National Guard members to Portland, where unrest outside an immigration detention center has dragged on for over 100 days. Now, Illinois and Oregon join the list of states under federal reinforcement.

On Sunday night, Pritzker announced the deployment of 400 Texas National Guard troops to Illinois, a move he claims defies his authority. Federal officials haven’t even bothered to coordinate with him, adding fuel to his fiery objections.

Pritzker slams 'invasion'

“We must now start calling this what it is: Trump’s Invasion,” Pritzker declared on X, clearly aiming to paint the president as a tyrant overstepping state rights. But let’s be real -- when federal agents are under attack, someone has to step in to restore order, not just tweet about sovereignty.

Pritzker also urged Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to pull support for the deployment, accusing Trump of turning the National Guard into “political props.” If protecting federal officers from mob violence is a political stunt, then perhaps Illinois needs a refresher on what governance looks like.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, who arrived in Illinois on Friday, didn’t mince words, calling Chicago a “war zone” during a Sunday interview on “Fox & Friends Weekend.” When even basic courtesies like restroom access are denied to federal law enforcement, as Noem claims happened to her in Broadview, you have to wonder who’s really playing politics here.

Chicago’s hostility to ICE unfolds

Noem further alleged that Chicago officials are blocking Border Patrol and ICE agents from using public restrooms, a petty jab if true. Denying basic facilities to officers risking their lives smells more like progressive posturing than principled policy.

The White House has stayed silent on the matter, offering no immediate comment to media inquiries. Perhaps they’re letting the actions speak louder than words, as troops prepare to reinforce embattled federal agents.

At the end of the day, this deployment isn’t about invasion -- it’s about law and order in cities where anti-ICE fervor has tipped into outright hostility. Trump’s move, while controversial, signals a refusal to let federal authority be undermined by local resistance or progressive agendas. If Pritzker wants to cry foul, he might first ask why his state’s policies have turned Chicago into a battleground.
