Times Square billboard claiming 'Jesus Is Palestinian' sparks holiday controversy

There's a Christmas clash in the heart of New York City, where a digital billboard boldly declaring “Jesus is Palestinian” has ignited a firestorm among holiday tourists.

A massive ad in Times Square, funded by the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), has stirred debate by pairing the provocative message with a “Merry Christmas” greeting, right in the middle of the festive rush in Midtown last week, as the New York Post reports.

The ADC, which has been securing ad space in Times Square since earlier this year, rotates weekly messages, and this one landed during the busiest season, when the city is packed with visitors soaking in the holiday spirit.

Billboard Message Fuels Heated Reactions

While the stated goal of the billboard is to emphasize an “America First” theme and bridge cultural ties between Arab, Muslim, and Christian communities, not everyone is feeling the unity.

“It’s quite a divisive message, if you’re pro-Palestinian, you’d find it OK,” said Sam Kept, a tourist from England. Let’s unpack that—divisive is putting it mildly when a sacred figure like Jesus gets dragged into a geopolitical tug-of-war during Christmas.

“It’s probably not a good time in the world to have that up. It’s inflammatory,” Kept added. Hard to disagree when the world’s already a tinderbox, and tossing a match like this into the mix feels less like dialogue and more like a deliberate jab.

ADC Defends Controversial Campaign Choice

The ADC, however, stands by the ad, arguing it’s about sparking conversation and highlighting shared heritage.

“There’s a lot more similarities between Arabs and Muslims and Christians in this country than others want to allow us to believe and there are similarities and there is a fear of culture, shared religion,” said Adeb Ayoub, National Executive Director of the ADC. While finding common ground is a noble aim, slapping a loaded claim on a billboard in Times Square might not be the coziest way to start that chat.

This isn’t the ADC’s only bold move—another billboard went up this week with the message “Jesus would say ‘tear down that wall,’” seemingly echoing a famous line from former President Ronald Reagan.

New Year’s Eve Ad Already Planned

Adding fuel to the fire, the ADC has plans for yet another display in Times Square to ring in the New Year, though the content remains under wraps for now.

Back to the current ad, the timing couldn’t be more charged, with Midtown swarming with holiday crowds who are either snapping selfies or shaking their heads at the display.

Some tourists see the message through a lens of inclusivity, but others can’t help but question the intent behind it.

Debate Over Timing and Intent Continues

Is this a genuine attempt at unity, or a calculated poke at sensitivities during a sacred season? The jury’s still out, but the placement during the Christmas rush feels less like outreach and more like a spotlight grab.

Progressive voices might cheer the ADC for challenging narratives, but conservatives are likely to see this as another overreach of woke messaging, prioritizing provocation over peace.

Ultimately, the Times Square billboard saga is a microcosm of broader cultural tensions—where even a holiday greeting can’t escape the shadow of politics. Maybe it’s time to remember that Christmas is about goodwill, not billboards that divide more than they unite.
