The National Weather Service is warning holiday travelers that a Super El Niño pattern may bring a historic winter weather event to large swaths of the United States, raising the odds of a white Christmas out West while leaving the East Coast warmer and wetter than usual.
A recently released NWS map shows that Americans in the higher elevations of western states could wake up to fresh snow on December 25, while much of the South and Southeast will likely stay too warm for accumulation. The forecast, still months out, has meteorologists urging drivers to start watching conditions early and packing emergency kits before hitting the road.
Super El Niño, a strong natural climate pattern driven by record-breaking high ocean temperatures in the Pacific, hits the continental United States hardest in December and January. That timing puts it on a direct collision course with the busiest travel window of the year.
AccuWeather meteorologist Peyton Simmers told Newsweek that the pattern favors snowfall in a specific band of the country.
"In a traditional El Niño pattern, the areas that favor a white Christmas are the higher elevations of the western states."
Those states include California, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Montana, Oregon, and Washington, at elevation. Ski towns and mountain passes could see significant accumulation, which means drivers crossing those corridors need to plan for chains, closures, and slow going.
The South, Gulf Coast, and Southeast sit on the other end of the spectrum. Temperatures in those regions are expected to stay too high for snow to stick, though stormier-than-normal conditions remain possible. Rain and wind, not snowflakes, are the likelier headaches for travelers in the southern tier.
Simmers offered a blunt assessment of the Northeast's white Christmas hopes:
"December during traditional El Niños is typically warmer than the historical average, yielding a lower-than-historical-average chance for a white Christmas across the eastern United States."
That does not mean the East Coast escapes trouble. Warmer air colliding with storm systems can produce freezing rain and ice, hazards that are arguably worse for drivers than a clean snowfall. Bridges and overpasses freeze first, and ice storms knock out power lines far more efficiently than snow does.
For families planning road trips through the mid-Atlantic or New England, the message is straightforward: snow may be unlikely, but dangerous driving conditions are not.
Ben Kirtman, a climate scientist at the University of Miami, told the New York Times that the scale of this event puts forecasters in unfamiliar territory.
"We are very much in uncharted territory."
Kirtman went further, warning that the sheer strength of the pattern could produce outcomes no one has modeled.
"What I feel completely confident in is that things are going to happen that are entirely unanticipated, things we didn't even think of."
That kind of candor from a working scientist should get drivers' attention. Standard El Niño forecasts rely on historical patterns. A "Super" event, defined by ocean temperatures that have broken previous records, may not follow the old playbook at all. Simmers' regional breakdown reflects what traditional El Niño years have produced. Whether this cycle behaves traditionally is an open question.
The NWS and weather forecasters are urging travelers to take a few basic precautions before loading up the car for Christmas. Check forecasts early and often. Carry an emergency kit with blankets, water, a flashlight, and a phone charger. Slow down on bridges and overpasses, which ice over before the rest of the road. And if conditions deteriorate, pull over, no family dinner is worth a rollover on a frozen highway.
Christmas is still months away, and long-range forecasts carry real uncertainty. But the broad strokes are clear enough to act on: the West gets snow, the East gets warmth and rain, and the South stays mild but stormy. Drivers who wait until December 23 to check the weather are the ones most likely to get caught.
When the National Weather Service uses the phrase "historic weather event," the smart move is to take them at their word and plan accordingly.
