Sen. Tim Kaine: GOP lawmakers poised to oppose Trump on Venezuela action

Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) is gearing up for a showdown with President Trump over potential military action in Venezuela, predicting even some GOP senators might jump ship to block unauthorized strikes, as the New York Post reports.

With tensions soaring between the U.S. and Venezuela, Kaine is pushing hard to stop Trump from acting without congressional approval, citing recent military deployments and disturbing reports about orders given during operations against alleged drug boats.

Let’s rewind a bit. Kaine has been at this for a while, having tried twice before to pass a War Powers Act resolution to halt military moves against Venezuela, only to see both efforts crash and burn.

Kaine Pushes for Oversight

The last attempt fell just short at 49-51, with only Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) crossing party lines to support him.

Now, with the Trump administration ramping up pressure. Think strikes on supposed drug boats, a $50 million bounty on Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, and a beefy deployment of the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group in the Caribbean. Kaine smells a broader conflict brewing.

Operation Southern Spear, as it’s called, boasts 70 aircraft, nine carrier air wings, and 11 ships, all under the banner of combating drug trafficking in the western hemisphere, but critics like Kaine worry it’s a prelude to something bigger.

New Reports Fuel War Crimes Concerns

Adding fuel to the fire, a Washington Post report dropped a bombshell about a Joint Special Operations Command strike on a drug boat, alleging Secretary of War Pete Hegseth verbally ordered to “kill everybody” after an initial attack left two survivors clinging to wreckage.

Kaine didn’t mince words on this, stating, “If that reporting is true, it’s a clear violation of the DOD’s own laws of war, as well as international laws about the way you treat people who are in that circumstance,” during an appearance on CBS News’ Face the Nation.

He went further, suggesting such actions could amount to war crimes if confirmed, a charge that’s got both House and Senate Armed Services Committees launching reviews into the administration’s conduct.

Hegseth Fires Back at Critics

Not one to sit quietly, Hegseth took to X to slam the coverage, declaring, “As usual, the fake news is delivering more fabricated, inflammatory, and derogatory reporting to discredit our incredible warriors fighting to protect the homeland.”

While his defense of the operations as lawful under U.S. and international standards might rally the base, it’s hard to ignore the stench of controversy when even seasoned politicos are raising eyebrows at the tactics.

Kaine, undeterred, is teaming up with heavyweights like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Paul, and Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) to roll out a fresh War Powers Act resolution the moment any military action kicks off.

Balancing National Security and Oversight

Under the 1973 War Powers Act, presidents are limited in using military force abroad without Congress’s nod, and Kaine is banking on this to rein in what he sees as reckless escalation.

Look, protecting the homeland from drug trafficking is a noble cause. No one’s arguing we should let cartels run wild -- but shouldn’t there be a line when it comes to how far we go without a proper debate in Congress?

With more GOP senators possibly swaying to Kaine’s side, especially after these latest revelations, the fight over Venezuela could become a defining test of how much unchecked power we’re willing to hand over, even to a leader many of us admire for shaking up the status quo.
