A tiny wild cat weighing no more than three pounds has been confirmed as an entirely new feline species, the first living cat species identified by scientists in more than 100 years, raising fresh questions about what else remains hidden in South America's vanishing mountain forests.
The species, formally named Leopardus tilcayo, was described in findings published in the journal Current Biology after years of genetic analysis confirmed the animal is distinct from every other known cat on Earth. Researchers say the tilcayo cat, roughly 18 inches long and smaller than a typical house cat, evolved from a common ancestor of so-called "tiger cats" approximately 1.4 million years ago. Its home range lies in Bolivia's Yungas cloud forest, a remote, high-altitude jungle draped along the eastern slopes of the Andes.
The discovery marks the first new cat species recognized since the pampas cat was identified in 1923. That a mammal this charismatic could go unnoticed for a full century says something about how little we still know, and how much we stand to lose if these ecosystems disappear before the science catches up.
The story began around 2017, when a local Bolivian family brought a small animal to the Senda Verde Wildlife Sanctuary in the Yungas region. The family had kept what they believed was a kitten as a pet for about a year before realizing it was a wild animal and turning it over to the refuge.
National Geographic Explorer Paola Nogales Ascarrunz, a co-author of the study, was among the researchers who examined the cat. Its physical features did not match reference photos of any known tiger cat species, a group of small, spotted wild cats native to Central and South America. ABC News reported that Nogales Ascarrunz described her first encounter with the animal plainly:
"The first time I saw it, it was really, really small and skinny and I couldn't believe like how small it was."
That initial puzzlement launched a deeper investigation. Rather than relying on appearance alone, the traditional method for classifying wild cats, the team turned to whole-genome analysis, comparing the sanctuary cat's DNA to that of museum specimens and other tiger cats across the region.
The genetic results were unambiguous. The tilcayo cat's DNA showed it had diverged from its closest relatives far too long ago to be a mere variant or subspecies. Evolutionary ecologist Jonas Lescroart of the University of Antwerp, a co-lead author of the study, explained the science in straightforward terms, as the New York Post reported:
"The more differences in their DNA, the longer the time that we estimate those lineages to have been physically separated."
The study, described as the most complete genetic analysis of tiger cats yet conducted, examining 38 cats, also identified a previously unknown subspecies within the broader tiger cat group. The full scope of that finding has not been detailed publicly beyond its mention in the research.
The 10-year-old male at Senda Verde remains the only confirmed captive individual of the species. Researchers have also deployed camera traps in the Yungas forest to document the cat in its natural habitat, though the number of wild individuals captured on camera has not been disclosed. In a world where conservation pledges for endangered species attract headlines, the tilcayo cat's situation is more basic: scientists do not yet know how many of these animals exist.
Nogales Ascarrunz was direct about that gap. "We really don't know how many cats are still in the wild," she told Breitbart News. "We need science, we need more studies to answer this question, which is actually critical for its conservation."
The discovery carries immediate implications for how conservation authorities classify these animals. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has already designated some tiger cat species as vulnerable following the reclassification prompted by the study. Splitting what was once considered a single widespread species into several smaller, geographically limited ones means each individual population is more fragile than previously understood.
The Yungas cloud forest, a lush, fog-shrouded belt of jungle that runs along Bolivia's Andean slopes, is not a well-known ecosystem outside South America. But it harbors extraordinary biodiversity, and Nogales Ascarrunz warned that the habitat is under direct threat.
"Currently, this ecosystem is threatened by deforestation, especially with wildfires. When they are not controlled... they start destroying this ecosystem."
That warning carries particular weight given what the tilcayo cat represents. If an entire feline species could remain unknown to science until 2026, the Yungas likely shelters other organisms that have never been catalogued. Losing the forest means losing species before anyone knows they exist, a permanent, irreversible subtraction from the natural world. The discovery echoes the broader pattern of science continually finding that the planet holds more than we assumed, much like recent fossil discoveries in unexpected places have reshaped understanding of ancient ecosystems.
Nogales Ascarrunz framed the tilcayo cat not as an endpoint but as a prompt. "I like to say... that we always think about big discoveries," she said. "But maybe these new things are just around us... now with Tilcayo, we have one more reason to conserve this beautiful world."
The scientific community's ability to miss an entire cat species for more than a century is not an indictment of past researchers, it is a measure of how vast and underexplored certain regions remain. Bolivia's cloud forests are remote, difficult to access, and sparsely studied compared to more famous biodiversity hotspots. The tilcayo cat's small size and secretive habits made it easy to overlook or misidentify as a juvenile of a known species. The fact that a local family kept one as a pet for a year without realizing what it was underscores how unfamiliar the animal is even to people who share its habitat.
Advances in genetic analysis made the identification possible. Traditional taxonomy, sorting animals by how they look, would not have caught the distinction. The tilcayo cat resembles other tiger cats closely enough that appearance alone could not separate it. Only by reading the animal's entire genetic code and comparing it to museum specimens could researchers confirm the 1.4-million-year split. It is a reminder that surprising biological discoveries continue to surface when scientists look carefully at material that has been sitting in plain sight.
The New York Post quoted Nogales Ascarrunz urging the scientific community to keep searching: "Even in the cats, there are things out there that are undescribed, things that people haven't found yet. So let's go out and find them and protect them."

But the hole it fills in the scientific record is large. For over a century, every new cat identified by researchers was already dead, known only from bones or skins. The tilcayo cat is alive, padding through a cloud forest that is burning at its edges, in a country where the resources to study and protect it are thin. The animal's existence was confirmed not by a massive expedition but by a family surrendering a pet they did not understand and a researcher who noticed something did not look right.
The Yungas forest faces the same pressures bearing down on wild habitats worldwide, deforestation, uncontrolled fire, development. The difference is that this particular forest just proved it still holds secrets. Whether those secrets survive depends on whether anyone acts on what the tilcayo cat's discovery plainly demonstrates: we cannot protect what we have not bothered to find.
A three-pound cat that hid from science for a century is a useful corrective for anyone who thinks we have the natural world figured out. We don't, and the clock on finding out is not getting longer.
