Left-wing terrorism has hit a shocking peak in the United States, outstripping far-right violence for the first time in three decades, according to a sobering new study.
A report from the Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) reveals that violent plots and attacks by far-left extremists reached a record high as a percentage of all terrorist incidents in the first half of 2025, fueled by opposition to the Trump administration, and are on track to hit a 30-year high, as the New York Post reports.
The numbers are staggering. Through early July, excluding high-profile incidents like the assassination of Charlie Kirk and the attack on a Dallas ICE facility, there were five documented left-wing attacks or plots. That’s over eight times the annual average of such incidents from 1995 to 2000.
CSIS researchers, who analyzed 750 terrorist acts and plots since 1994, confirmed this disturbing shift. For the first time in 30 years, far-left extremism has overtaken far-right violence in frequency. It’s a wake-up call for anyone who thought the radical left was just about protest signs and hashtags.
What’s driving this surge? Since President Donald Trump took office for the first time in 2016, left-wing violence has increasingly been tied to anti-government and partisan motives. Every attack or plot through early July of this year fits this pattern of hostility toward state institutions and political leadership.
Take the tragic killing of Charlie Kirk on Sept. 10. The alleged shooter, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, reportedly scrawled “Hey fascist, catch this” on a shell casing before the fatal act. If that doesn’t scream politically charged hatred, what does?
Opposition to the Trump administration is at the heart of this wave of violence. The CSIS study points to anger over policies like mass deportation efforts as a key trigger for attacks on both political figures and government facilities. It’s no coincidence that immigration has become a flashpoint.
This week’s assault on an ICE detention center in Dallas only underscores the tension. President Trump didn’t mince words, blaming the incident on the rhetoric of “radical left Democrats.” And honestly, when you hear the language coming from some leaders, it’s hard to disagree.
Consider California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s recent jab on late-night TV, calling ICE a “private domestic army” propping up authoritarianism. That’s not just criticism; it’s a verbal Molotov cocktail tossed into an already volatile situation. How does that cool tensions?
Then there’s Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who branded ICE a “modern-day Gestapo.” Hyperbole much? Such charged words from prominent figures risk fanning the flames of extremism, even if they’re not directly inciting violence.
Far-left Rep. Rashida Tlaib also chimed in, decrying a Trump-led crime crackdown in Washington, D.C., as a “fascist takeover.” It’s the kind of over-the-top label that plays right into the hands of those itching for a fight. Meanwhile, the White House has urged Democrats to “tone down” their ICE attacks, to little avail.
Even former Vice President Kamala Harris, during her campaign, didn’t hesitate to call Trump a “fascist” when pressed. When leaders normalize such extreme language, is it any wonder that some on the fringe take it as a green light for violence?
The CSIS report wisely notes that while political leaders aren’t responsible for every extremist in their camp, “they are responsible for how they behave towards extremism.” Both sides need to unequivocally condemn violence, whether it’s from their own ranks or the opposition. Anything less is just playing politics with public safety.
Yet, some on the left have failed this test, with the CSIS study criticizing the celebration of figures like accused killer Luigi Mangione as a refusal to reject support for violence. That kind of moral cowardice only emboldens radicals. It’s time for accountability, not applause.
On the flip side, the study suggests right-wing terrorism may have dipped this year because some extremists feel their grievances are being addressed under Trump’s leadership. Meanwhile, the left’s escalating attacks signal a dangerous desperation. If cooler heads don’t prevail, this divide will only deepen -- and the consequences could be catastrophic.
