Rare albino buck spotted in Wisconsin goes viral, reminding outdoors lovers why the wild still delivers

A video of a ghost-white buck sprinting across a Wisconsin road has taken off on Instagram, and for anyone who has spent time in the state's forests, the footage is as rare as it gets.

Instagram user @joelord_wi shared the clip this week, showing a full-racked albino whitetail deer bounding across a road somewhere in the Wisconsin Northwoods. The animal, bright white from nose to tail, with a heavy set of antlers, moved fast enough that the encounter lasted only seconds. But those seconds were enough to send the video racing across social media.

Albino whitetail deer are staggeringly uncommon. Only about one in every 30,000 whitetail births produces an albino, Fox Weather has reported. Wisconsin does not publish an exact count of albino deer in the state, which means every sighting carries the weight of a small lottery win for hunters, hikers, and anyone lucky enough to be holding a phone at the right moment.

One sighting in a lifetime of Wisconsin woods

OutKick reporter David Hookstead, who grew up in Wisconsin and has spent years covering outdoor culture, put the rarity in personal terms. He said he has seen an albino deer in person exactly once in his entire life.

"That's what makes seeing one so incredibly special. It might only happen once, if it happens at all."

Hookstead called the footage some of the best nature video he has seen in a long time and noted that his own brother-in-law captured separate footage of an albino deer back in 2024, a moment rare enough that OutKick ran a standalone piece on it.

The person behind the camera this time around, @joelord_wi, seemed to understand the moment's weight. The Instagram caption read:

"Well I hope this was a good omen for fishing this week in the Wisconsin Northwoods. Can't explain what it was like getting so close to such a majestic Unicorn! Wild Wisconsin, albino whitetail"

Wisconsin protects its white deer, and for good reason

Albino deer hold a protected status in Wisconsin, a recognition that the animals are too scarce to treat like ordinary game. The combination of legal protection and deep forest cover in the northern part of the state gives albino whitetails a better chance of survival than they might find elsewhere, though their white coats still make them conspicuous to predators year-round.

The Northwoods region, a sprawling stretch of lakes, pines, and state forest land across Wisconsin's upper tier, has long been one of the likeliest places in America to spot an albino deer. But "likeliest" is still a far cry from "likely." Hunters who spend decades in those woods can retire without ever seeing one.

OutKick recently launched its "OutKick Outdoors" vertical, a content section built around exactly this kind of footage, moments from the wild that remind a desk-bound audience why the outdoors still matters. The albino buck video fits the brand perfectly: no politics, no spin, just a rare animal doing what rare animals do when nobody expects it.

In a media landscape that runs on outrage, a white deer crossing a back road in Wisconsin is a welcome reminder that some things are still worth watching just because they're real.
