Princess Eugenie has revealed her newborn daughter's name, Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank, a choice that honors the late Queen Elizabeth II and ties together English and Portuguese royal history.

Eugenie, 36, shared the announcement on Instagram roughly two weeks after the baby's August 3 birth in Lisbon, Portugal, where she and husband Jack Brooksbank own property south of the capital. The couple posted photographs of Adelaide alongside her two older brothers, August, 5, and Ernest, 3, calling them "the best big brothers."

The baby is the couple's third child and the late Queen's 15th great-grandchild, the third born since Elizabeth II's death in 2022. Adelaide's arrival also nudges Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, from 15th to 16th in the line of succession to the British throne.

Three names, three tributes across two countries

Eugenie, the younger daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson and niece of King Charles III, explained the reasoning behind each name in her post. She said Adelaide was named "after three people we love and admire past and present, including her Great-Grandmother who we hold close in our hearts."

The middle name Elizabeth is a clear nod to the late Queen. Breitbart reported that the first name honors Queen Adelaide, who lived from 1792 to 1849 and was consort to King William IV, as well as Maria Adelaide of Portugal. The third name, Annina, pays tribute to a close friend, according to the same report.

Eugenie tied the naming choices to the family's life on both sides of the English Channel and the Iberian Peninsula, writing that "her name is part of English and Portuguese history, two places we love and call home."

Adelaide weighed 6 pounds 9 ounces at birth, and she is the most recent royal baby born outside the United Kingdom. The last was Princess Lilibet, born in California in June 2021.

A quiet two weeks before going public

The couple waited about two weeks before sharing the name publicly. The Sun reported that Eugenie described the intervening days as "the most special, cosy and love-filled time." Jack Brooksbank took one of the photos shared in the announcement, a portrait of baby Adelaide.

Eugenie had confirmed her pregnancy earlier this year with a social media post showing August and Ernest holding a baby scan, captioned "Baby Brooksbank due 2026!" She and Brooksbank married in 2018.

The birth fell on August 3, one day before Meghan Markle's 45th birthday. Markle marked the occasion separately on social media, thanking followers for "birthday love."

In a monarchy that has weathered public feuds, financial scandals, and family fractures in recent years, a straightforward baby announcement is a welcome change of pace, and a reminder that some traditions still hold.
