Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., shouted at President Donald Trump during the State of the Union, calling him a "liar" and a "murderer" after the president spoke about Somali-linked fraud in Minnesota. The outburst came as Trump pressed Democrats on their decision to cut funding for the Department of Homeland Security and made the case for his mass deportation agenda.
Omar was seated next to Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., who wore a profane pin on her shirt condemning ICE. The two scowled at the president throughout his remarks before leaving the chamber prematurely.
This is what passes for opposition politics in 2026: screaming "murderer" at the President of the United States during a joint session of Congress. Not a rebuttal. Not a policy counter. A tantrum.
The president used his address to confront Democrats directly over the funding standoff that has left the Department of Homeland Security hamstrung. According to Fox News, Trump did not mince words:
As we speak, Democrats in this chamber have cut off all funding for the Department of Homeland Security. It's all cut off; all cut off.
He linked the shutdown to real economic damage, noting that the first round cost 2 points of GDP. Then he made a demand that should not be controversial for anyone who takes national security seriously:
Tonight, I'm demanding the full and immediate restoration of all funding for border security, Homeland Security of the United States, and also for helping people clean up their snow.

That line should not require courage to say. The fact that it does tells you everything about where the Democratic Party has drifted.
Omar repeatedly shouted "You have killed Americans" during Trump's remarks. She could be heard saying, "You are a murderer." Sources in the gallery were unsure whether she also called the president a "sycophant" or something more profane.
Several minutes later, as Trump was recounting the raid on Caracas that captured Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro, Omar shouted again: "You're a liar."
Tlaib joined the spectacle. When Trump discussed the case of Alex Pretti, an armed man shot and killed by federal agents amid the chaos in Minneapolis, Tlaib shouted that "Alex wasn't a criminal."
Then they both walked out.
Trump turned his fire on sanctuary cities, and here the president was at his sharpest. He called on Congress to enact serious penalties for public officials who block the removal of criminal aliens:
In many cases, drug lords, murderers all over our country; they're blocking the removal of these people out of our country. And you should be ashamed of yourself.

Real people are affected by shutdown politics. Federal workers go without paychecks. Communities hit by severe weather wait for help that is delayed by Washington games. That is the cost of performative governance.
This is not the first time Omar or Tlaib have turned a congressional proceeding into a stage for progressive rage. Tlaib's profane pin. Omar's repeated accusations. The walkout. None of it is spontaneous. It is a brand, carefully maintained, that substitutes confrontation for competence.
And the Democratic leadership lets it happen. No censure. No public correction. No quiet word that perhaps shouting "murderer" at the president during a nationally televised address undermines the institution they were elected to serve. The silence is its own endorsement.
Trump asked Democrats to stand for the principle that the government's first duty is to its own citizens. Omar's answer was to call him a killer and walk out the door.
