Democrat New Jersey gubernatorial hopeful Mikie Sherrill is facing a storm from the past, with her husband, Jason Hedberg, now dragged into the spotlight over a decades-old Naval Academy cheating fiasco.

This messy saga, rooted in a 1992 scandal at the prestigious military institution, involves both Sherrill and Hedberg in a cheating scheme that rocked the academy, alongside a lawsuit to dodge accountability, now resurfacing to haunt her campaign, as the New York Post reports.

Let’s rewind to 1992, when a major breach of integrity unfolded at the Naval Academy over an Electrical Engineering exam, a required course for non-engineering majors taken by over 600 students.

Cheating scandal resurfaces

The day after the test on Dec. 14, 1992, academy officials sniffed out foul play -- answers had been shared among midshipmen, triggering a full-blown investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and multiple Honor Boards.

By the end, 88 midshipmen were found guilty of spreading the exam content, with 24 expelled and 64 slapped with penalties like delayed graduation—a clear violation of the academy’s sacred “honor concept” that demands truth and fairness.

Speaking of that honor code, it declares, “Midshipmen are persons of integrity.” Yet, one wonders how that squares with a scandal where, as an unnamed student later claimed, “probably 80%” knew about the leaked test beforehand.

Hedberg’s lawsuit dodges accountability

Enter Jason Hedberg, Sherrill’s husband, who was among roughly 48 midshipmen who, in early 1994, sued top Navy and Pentagon brass to block an Honor Board -- dubbed the “Allen Board” -- from deciding their fate.

Their complaint whined that they were “compelled to make inculpatory statements” to investigators, alleging a violation of due process and Fifth Amendment rights—a legal Hail Mary to avoid the consequences of their actions.

While a judge eventually ruled these concerns moot since no criminal charges were pending, Hedberg’s name still appeared in the 1994 commencement program, suggesting he skated by just months after the lawsuit, unlike Sherrill, who was barred from those ceremonies.

Sherrill’s campaign faces new scrutiny

Fast forward to today, and this old dirt is being dug up as Sherrill runs for governor, with her campaign refusing to release her disciplinary records from the academy -- hardly a beacon of transparency.

Her opponent’s camp isn’t holding back, with a source close to the rival campaign scoffing, “Nobody, including Mikie Sherrill, was barred from graduation ceremonies for covering for their friends.” That claim smells like revisionist history, and it’s clear the other side sees this as a character issue, not a footnote.

Sherrill’s team, meanwhile, is playing defense, with communications director Sean Higgins crying foul over “sick and desperate” attacks on her family, insisting Hedberg “served honorably” as a Navy intelligence officer after graduating.

Honor, politics clash

But let’s cut through the spin -- when your campaign’s response is to deflect rather than address why both husband and wife were tangled in a scandal that expelled dozens, it raises eyebrows about accountability in public office.

After all, the Naval Academy’s honor concept isn’t just a dusty motto; it’s a promise to uphold truth over convenience, something that feels awfully relevant when considering who should lead New Jersey.

As this race tightens, with recent polls showing Sherrill neck-and-neck with GOP candidate Jack Ciattarelli, voters deserve straight answers, not progressive dodges, about whether past lapses in integrity hint at future governance woes.
