Minnesota GOP gubernatorial candidate suspends campaign after daughter, 22, found fatally stabbed

Hallie Marie Tobler, the 22-year-old daughter of Minnesota Republican gubernatorial candidate Jeff Johnson, was found dead from multiple stab wounds inside her St. Cloud apartment Saturday evening. Her husband, Dylan Tobler, 23, was found alongside her with life-threatening injuries that police believe were self-inflicted.

Authorities arrived at the locked apartment at approximately 8:20 p.m. Saturday. They believe Dylan Tobler is responsible for Hallie's injuries and death. He was reported in stable condition at St. Cloud Hospital as of Sunday night, in police custody. Charges are pending.

Jeff Johnson has suspended his campaign for governor.

A family shattered

There is no political lens adequate to the horror of what happened in that apartment. A young woman is dead. A father who entered public life to fight for his state now faces the kind of private grief that no amount of public service can prepare a person for.

The Republican Party of Minnesota released a statement that captured what most people feel but struggle to articulate:

There are no words that can adequately express the sorrow we feel for Jeff and his family. The loss of a child is unimaginable and our thoughts and prayers are with them as they grieve this devastating tragedy.

The party confirmed that Johnson suspended his gubernatorial bid, adding:

We ask all Minnesotans to join us in lifting up the Johnson family during this incredibly painful time.

Johnson, a former St. Cloud City Council member, had been running to succeed Governor Tim Walz on a platform focused on fraud, crime, and economic trouble. He received less than one percent of the vote in the state's caucus earlier this month — a long-shot campaign by any measure. None of that matters now, the Daily Mail reported.

Condolences from across the aisle and within the primary

To their credit, figures from both parties responded with the kind of simple, human decency that political Washington too often forgets exists. Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth said:

The Johnson family is walking through an unspeakable tragedy right now and my prayers are with them every step of the way. As a parent, I can't imagine the grief and devastation they're experiencing right now.

Peggy Bennett, a fellow Republican gubernatorial candidate, issued a statement Monday:

I cannot even imagine the heartbreak and sorrow that Jeff and his family are experiencing right now. My heart breaks for them.

Minnesota Representative Kristin Robbins, also running against Johnson in the primary, wrote on X:

I am heartbroken for Jeff and his family over this horrifying tragedy. I can't imagine their grief. Please join Brent and me in praying for Jeff and his family. May God be their refuge and strength in the days ahead.

Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar — widely viewed as the frontrunner in the governor's race — shared that she and her family were praying for all those who loved Hallie during what she called an "unimaginably difficult time."

These are the moments when the machinery of politics briefly goes quiet, and what remains is just people recognizing the weight of another family's suffering. That it happened here, among rivals and opponents, says something worth noting.

The investigation

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting local authorities in St. Cloud. Dylan Tobler remains in police custody. No motive has been disclosed, and charges have not yet been filed.

The details that are known — a locked apartment, a young wife dead from multiple stab wounds, a husband with self-inflicted injuries — paint a grim and familiar picture. Domestic violence does not discriminate by party, class, or geography. It arrives in silence and leaves devastation.

Beyond politics

The crowded Republican primary field — which includes MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell and retired MMA fighter Brad Kohler, among others — will continue without Johnson. The campaign trail moves forward. It always does.

But for Jeff Johnson, the trail has ended at a place no parent should ever have to stand. His daughter was 22 years old. Whatever disagreements exist in Minnesota politics, whatever battles lie ahead over the direction of the state, they are — for this family, in this moment — utterly beside the point.

Hallie Marie Tobler deserved a full life. Her father deserves the space to grieve her.
