Meteor rattles New England as sonic boom shakes homes and floods 911 lines

A massive double boom ripped across New England on Saturday afternoon, rattling buildings from Rhode Island to the New Hampshire border, flooding police switchboards with 911 calls, and sending officers scrambling through Boston neighborhoods looking for an explosion that never happened. The culprit turned out to be roughly three feet of space rock.

The United States Geological Survey, the American Meteor Society, and multiple meteorologists have attributed the event to a meteor entering Earth's atmosphere near the New Hampshire, Massachusetts border, north of Boston. The object generated a sonic boom powerful enough to shake homes across at least three states and prompt reports from as far south as Delaware and as far north as Montreal.

No damage or injuries were reported. But the incident exposed, once again, how quickly a sudden, unexplained shock can overwhelm local emergency infrastructure, and how long it takes official agencies to deliver a clear answer to frightened residents.

Saturday afternoon: two booms and no answers

NOAA satellites detected a large flash over Boston around 2:00 p.m. Saturday. Roughly thirty minutes later, residents across eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island heard two rapid booms. Buildings shook. Windows vibrated. People ran outside.

One resident posted on Facebook that the sound was so violent she thought a tree had fallen on her house. Another wrote simply: "I thought my house was exploding. I ran outside." A third assumed thunder, then reconsidered.

Boston Police dispatched officers to the Brighton neighborhood to investigate. They found no fire, no smoke, no structural damage. Several videos posted on X captured what sounded like two quick booms with no visible cause. Dashcam footage picked up the sound as well.

Watertown Police issued a public statement acknowledging the flood of calls:

"We are getting numerous reports from residents of hearing a loud boom sound. It was heard over the eastern part of the state. Unknown origin no reports of hazards at this time."

Down in Coventry, Rhode Island, police posted their own update, speculating it might have been an earthquake: "The Boom: No reports of any damage or local incident as of yet. Earth Quake maybe."

It was not an earthquake. USGS spokesman Steve Sobie confirmed that while several people filed shaking reports with the National Earthquake Information Center, no event registered on seismographs. That ruled out any geological cause.

A yard-wide rock from space

The American Meteor Society quickly stepped in with an explanation. Robert Lunsford, the organization's fireball program monitor, told the Associated Press that the society had received dozens of reports spanning from Delaware to Montreal, sightings of a fireball, ground shaking, and the distinctive double boom.

"It was definitely bigger than a normal fireball, about a yard wide."

Lunsford said the society would need more trajectory and speed data to determine whether the meteor struck the ground. But the odds favored a less dramatic ending.

"We would need more information about the trajectory the speed and other aspects to know for sure if it hit the ground, but if it didn't burn up, then it would have landed in the ocean. Most of them do burn up before they hit the ground."

Ken Mahan, a Boston Globe meteorologist, explained the mechanics behind the boom. When a bolide, a large, bright meteor, tears through the atmosphere faster than the speed of sound, the compressed air ahead of it generates a massive pressure wave. That wave is what residents felt as a building-shaking explosion.

"These are large and often spark a sonic boom when passing through the atmosphere with speeds faster than the sound barrier and air compressing ahead of the meteor as it races through, generating a massive pressure wave."

Mahan noted that the average bolide meteor measures one to two meters across, roughly consistent with Lunsford's yard-wide estimate.

The event drew similar attention to a recent earthquake in southeast Missouri that triggered alarm across six states, another reminder of how quickly a natural event can overwhelm phone lines and leave residents searching for answers.

Satellite data pointed to a bolide

Meteorologist Nick Stewart analyzed NOAA's geostationary lightning mapper data and posted his findings on X. The satellite product showed an anomalous flash, distinct from lightning, that matched the signature of a bolide reentry.

"The flash density product really shows this anomalous 'flash' which is pretty distinctive of a bolide/meteor reentry. This is the likely source of the loud boom/explosion."

The USGS opened a formal event page after receiving a surge of "Did you feel it?" reports on its website. The agency cautioned that pinpointing the source of a sonic boom differs from locating an earthquake. Unlike seismic events, which originate at a discrete point underground, sonic booms occur along a linear path through the atmosphere. Any location estimate is an approximation.

An official at the National Weather Service said it was up to NASA to confirm whether the sound came from a meteor. As of the latest available reporting, NASA had not issued a formal confirmation for Saturday's event.

Not the first time, and not the last

New England's Saturday scare fits a pattern. The New York Post reported that a bright fireball was captured on camera streaking across southeast New Hampshire that same evening. Professional photographer Rob Wright photographed the object from Portsmouth, describing it as a bright green fireball that descended in a straight line over eight seconds. "That was one of the best I've seen and likely the best I've ever caught on camera," Wright said. Multiple sightings were reported across a 90-mile radius, including Nashua, Londonderry, Dover, Bedford, and several other towns.

Similar events have rattled American communities in recent memory. A meteor over Georgia in August produced a sonic boom equivalent to 20 tons of TNT. Parts of New York City shook during a comparable event in the summer of 2024.

And the pattern continued into Sunday. Fox News reported that NASA Meteor Watch determined a separate meteor exploded over Vermont and Massachusetts on Sunday evening at approximately 5:38 p.m. ET, traveling at 42,000 miles per hour. That object fragmented violently about 30 miles up, releasing energy equivalent to 440 pounds of TNT and producing a pressure wave that rattled buildings across New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and parts of Canada. One Vermont resident, Shannon Lemley-Willis of Johnson, said her children were playing outside and "described it as big trucks crashing."

Sudden, dramatic events like these, whether natural or man-made, test the readiness of local emergency systems. The recent evacuation of Miami International Airport over an unattended bag and a boat explosion near Miami's Haulover Beach both triggered mass emergency responses that stretched local resources thin.

The gap between the boom and the answer

What stands out about Saturday's event is not the meteor itself, space rocks enter Earth's atmosphere regularly. It is the lag between the moment residents felt their homes shake and the moment any official agency could tell them why.

Police departments across multiple states issued statements that amounted to "we don't know." The USGS confirmed what it wasn't, not an earthquake, but stopped short of confirming what it was. The National Weather Service punted to NASA. NASA, as of the available record, had not weighed in on Saturday's incident.

Residents were left to piece together the explanation themselves, scrolling social media, checking USGS pages, and reading meteorologists' posts on X. That is not an indictment of any single agency. Meteors are rare, fast, and hard to track in real time. But it is a reminder that when something shakes your house at 2:30 on a Saturday afternoon, the federal government's answer may arrive long after your neighbors on Facebook have already figured it out.

In an era of federal emergency declarations and billion-dollar disaster budgets, the public still often gets its fastest, most accurate information from a meteorologist posting on social media, not from the agencies taxpayers fund to monitor exactly this kind of event.

The meteor burned up or splashed harmlessly into the Atlantic. The real question is whether the next unexplained boom, one that turns out to be something worse, will get a faster answer from the people whose job it is to provide one.
