Jason Sudeikis says the biggest lesson from his nine-year relationship with Olivia Wilde was simple, he needed to speak up instead of expecting her to read his mind.
The “Ted Lasso” star laid out that admission on a recent episode of “Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso,” looking back on the relationship that ran from 2011 to 2020 and ended with an amicable co-parenting arrangement for their two children.
Page Six reported that Sudeikis, 51, did not dress up the takeaway. He said the core problem was not complicated, and he put the responsibility on himself.
“I think it’s just flat-out communication,” Sudeikis said.
“I could have communicated better with how I felt, how things were making me feel [and] how things make me feel.”
He went further. Assuming a partner could simply know what was wrong, he said, was unfair, and the same rule applied at work.
“If I’m feeling a certain way and I don’t talk about it, that doesn’t make it go away,” Sudeikis said. He called it “unfair” to treat anyone as a “mind reader,” whether that person was “a partner or a boss at ‘SNL’ or a line producer for a television show.”
That is not soft therapy talk. It is a plain description of how silent resentment works in a house, a set, or an office. Feelings that stay unspoken do not vanish. They sit there and harden.
Sudeikis framed the fix as speed and clarity. “It’s, like, ‘How do you convey those ideas quicker?’”
He and Wilde met at a “Saturday Night Live” party in 2011, got engaged in 2013, and welcomed son Otis Alexander in 2014 and daughter Daisy Josephine in 2016. They parted ways in 2020 and have been described as amicably co-parenting since.
Asked about understanding the breakup better years later, Sudeikis reached for an old formula about heartbreak.
“It’s the old equation of heartbreak, or any variation of it, takes half as long as the process itself... to get over something, so if it were a 10-year relationship, five years would be 20/20.”
In other words, a long relationship does not end on the day the couple splits. The sorting-out runs on its own clock. He did not claim to have skipped that process. He described living through it.
He also spoke well of Wilde’s work. He said she is “very good” at her job as a director, including on projects such as “Don’t Worry Darling.”
“I’m thrilled for her, and I feel very fortunate doing what I’m supposed to be doing,” he said. “But going through all that has allowed me to see when other folks are going through something similar.”
After the split, Sudeikis was romantically linked to Keeley Hazell from 2021 to 2022. Wilde dated Harry Styles in the same window, later dated actor and former basketball player Dane DiLiegro in 2025, and has since moved on with Casper Jopling, according to the same reporting.
None of that side cast changes the point Sudeikis chose to make on the podcast. He did not blame the calendar, the industry, or his ex. He blamed the habit of staying quiet and hoping someone else would decode it.
Adult relationships run on words said out loud, not on guesses. Sudeikis finally said the quiet part, and owned it.
