President Trump announced Sunday that ICE agents will deploy to airports across the country starting Monday to assist TSA officers struggling to keep security lines moving after more than a month without pay.
The move comes as a partial government shutdown drags on, with Democrats holding up Department of Homeland Security funding in hopes of securing immigration reforms. More than 400 TSA employees have already quit their jobs. Major airports are buckling under the pressure, with security wait times exceeding three hours in some cases.
Trump laid the blame squarely on Democrats in a post on Truth Social:
"On Monday, ICE will be going to airports to help our wonderful TSA Agents who have stayed on the job despite the fact that the Radical Left Democrats, who are only focused on protecting hard line criminals who have entered our Country illegally, are endangering the USA by holding back the money that was long ago agreed to with signed and sealed contracts, and all."
He also demanded Democrats "immediately sign an agreement" to fund DHS.
TSA agents have gone more than a month without a paycheck. Fox News reports that airports across the country have reported huge numbers of employees calling out sick or not showing up for work. The hardest-hit airports include:
Footage shot early Thursday morning in Philadelphia showed passengers waiting to clear a single security checkpoint. At William P. Hobby Airport in Houston, images captured hundreds of passengers crammed onto elevators and escalators, stuck in hours-long security lines.
These aren't minor inconveniences. These are systemic failures at critical national infrastructure, and they are entirely manufactured by a political standoff that Democrats chose.
Let's be clear about what's happening. The funding for DHS was "long ago agreed to with signed and sealed contracts," as Trump noted. Democrats are now holding that funding hostage to extract immigration concessions, which means they are using the safety and paychecks of tens of thousands of TSA employees as a bargaining chip.
This is the same party that lectures endlessly about "workers' rights" and "government employees deserving dignity." When it suits their political interests, though, those workers can go a month without pay. The contradiction isn't subtle. It's just ignored.
Democrats want immigration reforms badly enough to let airport security collapse. Think about what that priority structure reveals. They would rather see three-hour security lines and federal employees quitting en masse than fund the department responsible for homeland security on terms already agreed upon.
Earlier Saturday, before Trump's announcement, Elon Musk offered a stopgap of his own. Writing on X, Musk said:
"I would like to offer to pay the salaries of TSA personnel during this funding impasse that is negatively affecting the lives of so many Americans at airports throughout the country."
Whether that offer materializes into a concrete mechanism remains to be seen, but the gesture highlights something Democrats apparently missed: the problem is urgent, real people are suffering, and someone needs to act now rather than wait for a political resolution.
Trump's ICE deployment is the executive branch doing exactly that. Rather than waiting for Democrats to come to the table, he is routing available federal personnel to where they are needed. Tom Homan is in charge of the operation, and Trump expressed full confidence in the outcome.
"But watch, no matter how great a job ICE does, the Lunatics leading the incompetent Dems will be highly critical of their work. THEY WILL DO A FANTASTIC JOB. The great Tom Homan is in charge!"
Trump is right about one thing that hasn't happened yet: Democrats will criticize the ICE deployment. Count on it. The same politicians who created the staffing crisis by blocking DHS funding will turn around and complain about the solution.
They'll raise concerns about ICE agents at airports. They'll suggest it's "militarizing" travel. They'll find a civil liberties angle. What they won't do is acknowledge that none of this would be necessary if they had simply funded the department on the terms already negotiated.
This is the infinite loop of progressive governance. Create a crisis through obstruction. Attack the people who step in to fix it. Claim the fix proves the system is broken. Demand more power to address the brokenness you caused.
More than 400 TSA employees didn't quit because they have rent, groceries, and families, and a month without pay is not something most Americans can absorb. Every one of those resignations makes the next traveler's wait longer, the next checkpoint more chaotic, and the next security gap more likely.
This isn't an abstraction. It's a mother with two kids standing in a three-hour line in Houston. It's a business traveler missing a flight in Atlanta. It's a TSA officer deciding between showing up for a job that isn't paying and finding one that will.
Democrats chose this. Monday, ICE shows up to clean it up.
