Hunter Biden took to social media to mock Donald Trump Jr. over reports that a wealthy Russian businessman helped fund his post-wedding festivities, a jab that lands awkwardly given Biden's own long history of controversy.
The former first son posted his taunt on Tuesday, one day after ProPublica published an investigative report alleging that Umar Kremlev, a Russian businessman and associate of Vladimir Putin, paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for two nights of celebrations following Trump Jr.'s marriage to socialite Bettina Anderson. Trump Jr. and his new wife confirmed the arrangement but insisted it was nothing more than a generous gift from a personal friend.
Hunter Biden's post read: "Don Jr needed a Russian oligarch, two islands, and a fireworks show. I got married on the rooftop of an apartment building in West Hollywood. It was so much cooler." He included a photo of himself embracing his wife, South African activist Melissa Cohen, whom he married on May 16, 2019, within ten days of meeting her, the Daily Mail reported.
The irony of Hunter Biden, a man who has faced federal criminal charges, a tax case, and years of scrutiny over foreign business entanglements, lecturing anyone about ties to foreign nationals was not lost on conservative observers. Biden has spent recent months on a public media campaign that critics say amounts to a sustained effort to rehabilitate his image.
The ProPublica report that triggered the exchange detailed how Kremlev allegedly helped bankroll the couple's post-wedding party at Little Pipe Key, a private island in the Bahamas. The expenses reportedly included the island rental, a fireworks show, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional costs. Kremlev's team also planned the event, according to the report.
The Washington Examiner reported that the island rental alone ran $100,000 per night and the fireworks display cost $70,000. Little Pipe Key is described as a members-only sanctuary with a private airstrip, customs clearance, personalized butler services, and accommodation costs starting at $1,400 per person per night.
The island carries a colorful history. Between 1978 and 1982, it served as a smuggling base for Carlos Lehder, a senior figure in Pablo Escobar's Medellin cartel.
Trump Jr. and Bettina had originally planned a larger wedding at the White House, but tensions in the Middle East, the article references an escalating conflict with Iran, forced them to scale back. President Trump did not attend the ceremony, citing national security responsibilities.
The couple married in late May at the West Palm Beach home of Bettina's sister, Kristina McPherson, with just 18 guests. A marriage certificate obtained by the Daily Mail confirmed the location and noted that the 39-year-old model would take the Trump surname. About 50 guests then attended the Bahamas reception over Memorial Day weekend. Eric Trump, 42, and Ivanka Trump, 44, were among those who traveled to the island.
On Monday, Bettina Trump posted a lengthy Instagram statement alongside never-before-seen wedding photos. She drew a sharp line between the private ceremony and the island celebration, insisting the weekend had been planned well before the couple decided to move up their wedding date.
She wrote:
"Don and I got married privately on Friday, surrounded ONLY by our family. It was intimate, deeply personal and one of the most beautiful days of our lives. The weekend that followed had actually been planned well in advance as a fun weekend with friends."
Bettina acknowledged Kremlev's financial role directly, calling him a "dear friend" and describing his contribution as a wedding gift.
"Our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding. It was an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful."
She pushed back against the political framing of the story, adding:
"It's unfortunate that something so personal and happy can be recast as something political or sinister simply because of who someone is or where they come from. Friendship doesn't require a political motive. Generosity doesn't automatically come with an agenda. And sometimes a wedding gift is simply a wedding gift."
Her statement closed with a pointed swipe at media coverage: "And since fake news travels fast, we figured the truth deserved a few pictures." She signed off, "With love and gratitude, Don & Bettina."
Breitbart reported additional details about Kremlev's background that sharpen the political questions around the arrangement. Kremlev heads the International Boxing Association, which the International Olympic Committee cut off over governance concerns. He received the "Order of Friendship" award from Vladimir Putin in April 2026. He is also a member of the Night Wolves, a pro-Kremlin biker club whose members participated in the annexation of Crimea and fought alongside pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.
Eric Trump's spokesperson sought to distance the president's second son from the controversy, stating that Eric "has absolutely no clue who this person is, nor has he ever heard his name."
House Oversight Democrats have reportedly drawn scrutiny from the revelation, though no specific hearings, letters, or formal actions have been described. The Daily Mail reached out to Don Jr. for comment and had not heard back.
Whatever legitimate questions exist about Kremlev's role, Hunter Biden is among the least credible people in American public life to raise them. His own foreign entanglements, from Ukrainian energy company Burisma to Chinese business ventures, fueled years of congressional investigations and a federal criminal case. He has sworn under oath that his family is broke even as a former law firm pursued him for $17 million.
His personal life has been no less chaotic. Before marrying Cohen after knowing her barely a week and a half, Biden had dated Hallie Biden, the widow of his late brother Beau, a relationship that ended in April 2019. His social media post boasting about his rooftop West Hollywood wedding as "so much cooler" reads less like a serious policy critique and more like another chapter in a long-running effort to stay relevant.
Biden has recently expanded that effort beyond social media. He unloaded on CNN's Jake Tapper in a profanity-laced podcast appearance and launched a cryptocurrency venture, a meme coin tied to his infamous laptop, that crashed and left thousands of investors in the red.
Don Jr. and Bettina's relationship became public roughly a year before their December 2025 engagement, when the Daily Mail published exclusive photos of the pair leaving a Palm Beach restaurant holding hands. At the time, Don Jr. was still officially engaged to Kimberly Guilfoyle.
