Hayden Panettiere secretly reunited with the ex-boyfriend she once accused of beating her and helped send to jail, and friends say she told no one before she died at 36 in South Carolina.

Panettiere was found unresponsive at the Judson Mill Lofts in Greenville, South Carolina, on Sunday, August 17, 2026, shortly before 2 p.m. Emergency personnel pronounced her dead at the scene. She was five days short of her 37th birthday. The Greenville Police Department and the Greenville County Coroner's Office opened an investigation but said a preliminary review turned up no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. The official cause of death has not been released.

What stunned people closest to her was not the death itself, Panettiere had been open for years about her struggles with addiction and trauma, but who was with her at the end. Page Six reported exclusively that friends had been kept "in the dark" about Panettiere's apparent reconciliation with Brian Hickerson, the former boyfriend who pleaded no contest to two felony counts of injuring her and served 45 days in county jail.

TMZ, as cited by Page Six, reported that Panettiere flew from Los Angeles to South Carolina with Hickerson the day before she died. Hickerson's family was reported to be "aware" of her death, but Hickerson himself had not publicly responded as of publication.

Friends say Panettiere kept the reunion secret

A friend of Panettiere's spoke exclusively to Page Six and described the shock of learning Hickerson had apparently re-entered her life.

"If Brian was back in her life, then it was something she was hiding because she wasn't speaking about it with many of her friends."

The same friend offered a possible explanation rooted in shame rather than choice.

"If you've gone through some dark times with people, and spoken about it, then there can be shame if you get back together with that same person. So maybe that was why she hadn't mentioned it to us."

Signs of the reconnection had surfaced months earlier. In March 2026, Panettiere and Hickerson were spotted together at LAX, where he accompanied her as she walked on crutches. Panettiere had been dealing with severe back pain and mobility problems in the months before her death. The airport sighting sparked reconciliation rumors, but no one close to her confirmed the relationship publicly.

Hickerson's criminal record includes two felony domestic violence convictions

Panettiere and Hickerson were first linked romantically in 2018. By May 2019, Hickerson was arrested for felony domestic violence following an alleged altercation at their home after the pair had been drinking in Hollywood. TMZ reported at the time that redness and marks were visible on Panettiere's body. Hickerson was charged and ordered to stay 100 yards from Panettiere and have no contact with her.

That case was dismissed in September 2019. But on Valentine's Day 2020, Hickerson was arrested again, this time in Wyoming, after he allegedly struck Panettiere "with a closed fist on the right side of her face." He was released on $5,000 bond.

In July 2020, Panettiere obtained a restraining order against Hickerson and went public with her account of the abuse on Instagram. She wrote that she was "coming forward with the truth about what happened to me with the hope that my story will empower others in abusive relationships to get the help they need and deserve."

She added a pointed warning about her ex.

"I am prepared to do my part to make sure this man never hurts anyone again. I'm grateful for my support system, which helped me find the courage to regain my voice and my life."

In April 2021, Hickerson pleaded no contest to two felony counts of injuring a spouse or girlfriend. A judge sentenced him to 45 days in county jail, four years of probation, 52 domestic violence classes, a $500 fee, and a five-year restraining order. Panettiere and Hickerson officially split in July 2022.

Yet by March 2026, they were together again at an airport. And by May 2026, Hickerson was publicly recounting abusive incidents as though they were casual anecdotes. He recalled a story in which he told Panettiere, while drunk and holding a phone: "Hayden I'll give you 10 seconds to run as fast as you can before I throw it at you." The platform or outlet where he made that admission was not specified.

911 dispatch audio pointed to cardiac arrest after a suspected overdose

The New York Post reported that 911 dispatch audio confirmed Panettiere was found "unresponsive" and in "cardiac arrest" at 1:51 p.m. Sunday at the Greenville apartment. Responding paramedics used advanced cardiac life support measures, including possible breathing tubes, defibrillators, and IV drugs, in an attempt to resuscitate her. She was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m.

Breitbart reported that Panettiere died after going into cardiac arrest during a suspected overdose at the rented apartment. Narcan, a nasal medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, was found in a mattress at the scene. The Greenville County Coroner indicated there were no signs of trauma that would have contributed to her death.

A detailed police report later shed light on Panettiere's final moments and on Hickerson's behavior in the immediate aftermath.

A memoir published three months before her death chronicled years of addiction

Panettiere had been candid about her battles with substance abuse and mental health for years, but the fullest account came in her memoir, "This Is Me: A Reckoning," published in May 2026, just three months before she died. Fox News reported that the book contained a passage about growth continuing "until the moment you take your last breath," words that took on grim new weight after her death.

The memoir traced her first stint in rehab back to 2015, when her daughter Kaya was just four months old. During that stay she was diagnosed with postpartum depression. She wrote that she traded one addiction for another: "I'd walked into rehab addicted to one substance, and I'd walked out, completely dependent on something else."

In a separate interview with People, Panettiere described being offered pills at age 15 to keep her "peppy" during interviews. "I had no idea that this was not an appropriate thing, or what door that would open for me when it came to my addiction," she said. She began acting as a child and rose to fame through roles on "Heroes," "Nashville," and the "Scream" franchise. Her memoir laid bare a lifetime of addiction and abuse that started before she was old enough to understand what was happening to her.

Panettiere's death adds her name to a growing and grim list. Fellow child stars have been lost to addiction, illness, and the consequences of growing up inside an industry that chews through young lives without a second thought.

Unanswered questions hang over Greenville

Her father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed the death in a statement. "It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden," he said, calling her "an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her, and to the millions who watched her on-screen." He asked for privacy as the family processes the loss. Panettiere is survived by her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya.

The Washington Examiner noted that authorities have not released an official cause of death. The investigation by the Greenville Police Department and the Greenville County Coroner's Office remains open. No arrests have been reported.

Several questions remain unanswered. The five-year restraining order imposed at Hickerson's April 2021 sentencing would have been set to expire around April 2026, raising the question of whether it was still in effect when the pair was seen together at LAX in March. No one has explained the nature of the injury that put Panettiere on crutches that day. And Hickerson, as of publication, had said nothing publicly about the death of the woman he was convicted of beating.

Panettiere told the world in 2020 that she wanted to make sure Hickerson "never hurts anyone again." Four years later, she was back at his side. Six years later, she was dead in a rented apartment in South Carolina. The system that sentenced him to 45 days, 52 classes, and a $500 fee did not keep him away. Neither, in the end, did she.
