A 34-year-old man was shot dead on a Midtown Manhattan subway platform Saturday after a dispute, and the gunman who fired from a train remains at large.
Gunfire erupted at 12:21 p.m. inside the 7th Avenue station at 53rd Street, the NY Post reported, citing police and sources. The victim was apparently shot in the chest on the northbound B/D/E platform after some type of argument with the gunman.
The shooter did not fire from the platform. He opened fire from inside a northbound E train onto the platform, then fled. Police are still searching for him.
That is the core of what investigators have put on the record so far: a dispute, shots from a subway car, a man down in Midtown, and a suspect who got away.
Responders administered CPR to the 34-year-old victim right there on the platform. He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in cardiac arrest and pronounced dead.
No arrest has been announced. The NYPD said it is searching for the gunman. Security footage last showed him in a red tracksuit, a black puffer vest, and what appeared to be a black balaclava.
Authorities have not released the victim’s name. They have not named the suspect. They have not spelled out what the argument was about. Details of the dispute, sources told the Post, are not yet clear.
The location matters. This was the 7th Avenue station at 53rd Street in Midtown, a busy Manhattan stop on a Saturday afternoon, not a deserted outer-borough platform after midnight.
The method matters too. The gunman fired from inside the northbound E train onto the northbound B/D/E platform. He used the train as cover and position, then escaped into the system before police could grab him.
Police and sources described the sequence in plain terms: argument, gunfire at 12:21 p.m., chest wound, CPR on the platform, death at Bellevue, and a manhunt for a suspect in a red tracksuit and black puffer vest.
No charges, no custody, and no public identification of either man have been reported. The investigation remains open. The suspect remains free.
New Yorkers who ride the subway for work, school, and errands are left with the same hard facts: a man is dead, the shooter fired from a train onto a Midtown platform, and he walked away while cops are still looking.
Law and order means nothing if a gunman can settle a dispute with a chest shot on a Saturday afternoon platform and vanish into the system.
