A Fresno-area contractor who once appeared on HGTV died this week while hiking near Mount Whitney, adding to the mountain’s grim record of fatal climbs.

Kalem Peter Kazarian, 52, a contractor from Fowler just south of Fresno, died this week in Sequoia National Park, the Tulare County Coroner’s Office confirmed to local reporters.

Local accounts said he died Monday while hiking Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States at 14,505 feet. The coroner listed the place of death as Sequoia National Park and said the cause was not yet available.

Kazarian left behind his wife, Jonelle, and three children. The couple had recently marked 27 years of marriage.

Family man, contractor, and brief HGTV face

Kazarian worked as a contractor in the Fresno area. In May 2019 he helped on an HGTV “Go Big or Go Home” episode built around a Fresno-area home.

That television credit is how many readers will first place his name. The fuller picture is simpler and heavier: a husband and father who hiked hard country for pleasure.

Jonelle Kazarian had posted photos of the pair on social media enjoying the outdoors, including a climb this summer of White Mountain, another 14,000-foot California peak. The images showed a couple comfortable at altitude, not novices stumbling into the wilderness.

Mount Whitney does not care about experience. Permits are required to hike it. The main Mount Whitney Trail runs 21.7 miles round-trip with more than 6,000 feet of elevation gain. An east-face mountaineering route covers about 9.4 miles round-trip. Thin air, weather swings, and steep ground turn small mistakes into permanent ones.

Whitney’s recent toll

Kazarian’s death is not an isolated shock on that ridge line.

In December of last year, searchers recovered the body of 21-year-old Joseph Brambila nearly a month after he went missing while scaling the peak. The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office said he appeared to have suffered a “significant fall.”

In January, one member of a hiking pair died after the other continued alone, another reminder that the mountain punishes separation and bad timing as readily as it punishes inexperience.

Officials have not released a cause or manner of death for Kazarian, and they have not said whether he was alone, which route he used, or exactly where in the Sequoia National Park / Mount Whitney area he went down. Those answers may come later. They will not change the basic fact already on the record.

A working contractor from Fowler went into high country and did not come home.

What is known, and what is not

The coroner’s confirmation covers identity, age, the fact of death this week, and the Sequoia National Park location. Local reporting tied the hike to Mount Whitney and put the day as Monday. Cause of death remains pending. No public incident report with trail name, companions, or weather detail has been attached to the initial confirmation.

That leaves a clean, unfinished outline: a 52-year-old husband, father of three, Fresno-area contractor, and one-time HGTV helper died on one of America’s most demanding day-hike mountains. His wife’s recent posts show they sought those summits together. The peak’s recent history shows others have paid the same price.

High places reward preparation and still collect the prepared. California’s tallest summit keeps proving the point, one name at a time.
