A 25-year-old man who worked on President Biden's White House security team and once posed for a photo with Kamala Harris has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after his 22-year-old girlfriend was shot and killed at a home near Ocean Beach in San Francisco.
Nation Wood was arrested Tuesday after Samantha Emge was found with a gunshot wound at 10:43 p.m. She was transported to a hospital, where she later died. Wood remained in custody at the San Francisco County jail as of Friday, The Daily Mail reports.
Emge, a recent graduate of San Francisco State University who worked in interior design, was 22 years old.
Wood's LinkedIn profile described a part-time role running from November 2023 to July 2025 in which he called himself an "independent pre-event site security advisor." His profile claimed he performed "external advisory site security assessments for events with VIP attendance." He went further, stating his experience included "site walkthroughs and advance coordination alongside U.S. Secret Service for senior government and high-net-worth principals."
In 2024, during the APEC summit in San Francisco, Wood shared a photo of himself with Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff. He described himself as "very grateful" for the opportunity.
It is worth noting that being adjacent to power is not the same as wielding it. Wood was, by his own description, a part-time external advisor. But the photo with the then-vice president tells its own story about access, about proximity, and about the kind of people who orbit high-level Democratic events. That proximity now sits in sharp contrast to a manslaughter charge.
Alan Wong, the local supervisor representing the Ocean Beach area, offered a measured statement:
"Early information suggests that this may not have been an intentional act."
Wong also expressed sympathy for the victim and her family:
"I'm deeply saddened by this tragic incident in our community. My thoughts are with the victim and her loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. Any loss of life in our community is devastating, regardless of the circumstances."
Those are appropriate words from a local official. But "regardless of the circumstances" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. The circumstances matter enormously to Samantha Emge's family. A young woman who had just launched her life, freshly out of college and building a career, is dead because of a gunshot wound inside a home.
Involuntary manslaughter, under California law, generally involves a killing that occurred without intent but through criminal negligence or during the commission of an unlawful act. The charge itself suggests prosecutors do not believe Wood intended to kill Emge. Early reports indicate the shooting may have been accidental.
None of that softens the outcome. Accidental does not mean blameless. A firearm was involved, someone pulled the trigger or failed to handle the weapon responsibly, and a 22-year-old woman is dead. Gun owners, the ones who take the Second Amendment seriously, understand that every round has a destination and every handler bears responsibility. Negligence with a firearm is not a minor lapse. It is a catastrophic failure of the most basic duty a gun owner carries.
Conservatives have long argued that the answer to gun violence is not more laws but more responsibility. This case reinforces that principle from the ugliest possible angle. If Wood was negligent, the law should hold him fully accountable. That is not a contradiction of gun rights. It is the foundation of them.
The political connections make this story unusual. They do not make it more tragic. What makes it tragic is Samantha Emge. She was 22. She had just graduated. She was working in interior design, building something. Every detail about her life points forward, toward plans and ambitions that no longer exist.
The investigation will determine what happened inside that home near Ocean Beach on Tuesday night. The courts will decide whether the manslaughter charge holds or whether additional charges follow. Nation Wood will have his day in court.
Samantha Emge will not have another day at all.
