Senator John Fetterman publicly confronted reporters from progressive outlets on Capitol Hill, accusing them of anti-Israel bias and questioning their funding, escalating the Democratic divide over the party’s stance on Israel and Hamas.

Sen. John Fetterman, a Pennsylvania Democrat, made headlines Wednesday during tense exchanges with reporters from Drop Site News and Zeteo, two left-leaning outlets he described as “pro-Hamas.” The confrontations unfolded on Capitol Hill as Fetterman, who has become one of the most vocal pro-Israel Democrats in the Senate, rebuked the reporters for what he called their sympathetic coverage of groups hostile to Israel, including Hamas, Iran, and Hezbollah.

Fetterman did not hold back. When approached by Drop Site News reporter Julian Andreone, he immediately recognized the outlet and fired back, “Oh, you’re Drop Site. It’s like a race between who’s the more pro-Hamas, Drop Site or Zeteo.” He went further, telling Andreone, “I want your viewers to see how much I love to watch Israel eliminating the Hamas leadership. I know that upsets a lot of your viewers and a lot of your founders. But I think it’s a great thing. So there’s no news coming out of me. I’m going to always back Israel.”

Fetterman’s remarks came as the Democratic Party faces growing internal conflict over its approach to the Israel, Hamas war. The senator, who has previously suggested he would re-evaluate his place in the party if it embraces an anti-Israel platform, has been increasingly outspoken in his support for Israel’s right to defend itself after the October 7 Hamas attack. During the Capitol Hill exchange, he criticized Drop Site News co-founder Jeremy Scahill for attacking Rep. Ro Khanna over the Hamas attack, and pressed Andreone about the outlet’s funding, asking, “The question is, where does your trash outlet come from and who’s funding it?”

Funding, accusations, and Democratic rifts come into focus

Reporter Julian Andreone responded by stating that Drop Site News is funded by “46,000 individual donors,” but Fetterman wasn’t satisfied, pressing further: “Now you’re sticking a microphone in my face... I think the question is why does Drop Site love Hamas and Iran and Hezbollah so much? I think that’s the news. I mean, are you OK with taking your paycheck from these kind of people?”

Fetterman’s combative approach is not limited to Drop Site News. In a separate encounter, he labeled Zeteo, a new outlet founded by former MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan, as “pro-Hamas.” Hasan, for his part, had recently attacked Fetterman on social media, calling him a “broken-brained, racist Democrat” for meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The senator’s willingness to stand apart from the left’s activist media ecosystem is nothing new. In recent months, Fetterman has broken with his party on several high-profile issues, including returning a blue slip for a Trump judicial nominee and rebuking Democratic messaging on Trump voters, as seen in previous Senate clashes and his defense of the president’s supporters. His independent streak has led to both praise and attacks from across the political spectrum, drawing attention from party leaders like Chuck Schumer, who has urged Fetterman to remain in the Democratic Party amid speculation about a possible defection.

Fetterman’s hard line on Israel and party politics

“Your founders think it’s appropriate to attack and kill Israeli civilians. That’s really, that should be the news overall,” Fetterman said, referencing Drop Site News leadership. He made clear his stance would not change: “There’s no news coming out of me. I’m going to always back Israel.” When asked about Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s presence in the United States, Fetterman replied simply, “I’m OK.”

The senator’s sharp rhetoric on Israel stands in contrast to the far-left flank of his party, which has become increasingly critical of Israel’s military response to Hamas. Fetterman’s comments echo his earlier statements suggesting he would reconsider his affiliation if Democrats adopt an anti-Israel platform, a position he has discussed in recent interviews and public appearances. The ongoing friction is reminiscent of other intra-party skirmishes, such as when Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed sparked controversy with remarks directed at Fetterman, refusing to apologize for describing him as an “ogre on a pike” during a heated debate over Middle East policy.

Even as Fetterman stands firm on Israel, he has not shied away from criticizing his own party on other issues. When Democrats failed to prevent a government shutdown, Fetterman apologized to those affected, saying, “After 40 days as a consistent voice against shutting our government down, I voted YES for the 15th time to REOPEN.” He added, “I’m sorry to our military, SNAP recipients, gov workers, and Capitol Police who haven’t been paid in weeks. It should’ve never come to this. This was a failure.” Breitbart reported on Fetterman’s apology and his repeated break with party leadership.

Fetterman’s health and resilience amid political battles

Despite recent health challenges, including a 2022 stroke and a brief hospitalization in Washington, D.C., Fetterman has remained active in the Senate and on the front lines of contentious debates. As the New York Post reported, Fetterman’s communications director confirmed he was discharged after testing ruled out any new stroke or seizure, and that he uses closed-captioning technology to assist with lingering auditory processing issues in Senate proceedings.

Fetterman’s record of standing apart from the Democratic establishment has made him a lightning rod for both criticism and support. In past months, he has defended voters his party often attacks, as seen in his defense of Trump voters, and has not hesitated to call out what he sees as hypocrisy or extremism among left-wing activists and media.

While Fetterman’s language toward reporters and rival outlets is blunt, his unwavering support for Israel, and his willingness to challenge the left’s orthodoxy, highlights a growing rift in the Democratic Party that party leaders have so far struggled to bridge.

When Democrats lose touch with reality and basic fairness, even their own are forced to call them out, sometimes in ways the party’s activist base would rather ignore.
