Federal judge halts deportation of UK activist pushing censorship of conservatives

A New York federal judge just threw a wrench into the Trump administration’s plan to send a British activist packing for trying to silence conservative voices.

Breitbart reported that Judge Vernon Broderick of the Southern District of New York issued an order stopping the deportation of Imran Ahmed, CEO of the Centre for Countering Digital Hate, after the State Department slapped sanctions and a visa ban on him and four other Europeans for their censorship efforts against U.S. platforms and conservative outlets like Breitbart News.

For hardworking American taxpayers, this ruling raises serious questions about legal accountability—why should our courts shield a foreign national accused of meddling with free speech, potentially at the cost of millions in legal fees and enforcement resources down the line?

Judge Blocks Deportation on Christmas Day

Let’s rewind to earlier this week when the State Department announced sanctions against Ahmed, a British citizen of Afghan heritage living in the U.S. on a Green Card, for supposedly pushing to censor and demonetize American viewpoints.

Ahmed, the only one of the five sanctioned individuals residing in the U.S., also happens to be a former UK Labour Party advisor with ties to high-ranking British officials.

His organization, CCDH, founded with involvement from Morgan McSweeny—now Chief of Staff to UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer—has openly targeted conservative media, including Breitbart News, for deplatforming.

Internal documents from CCDH even boast a mission to “Kill Musk’s Twitter” after the platform eased up on prior censorship rules under Elon Musk’s leadership.

That’s a bold strategy for an outfit operating on American soil, and it’s no wonder the State Department, under Secretary Marco Rubio, decided enough was enough.

As Under Secretary of State Sarah B. Rogers put it, “If you spend your career fomenting censorship of American speech, you’re unwelcome on American soil.” Well, that’s a mic drop if I’ve ever heard one, though apparently Judge Broderick didn’t get the memo.

Ahmed’s Appeal and Courtroom Drama

Ahmed wasn’t about to go quietly, launching an emergency appeal claiming the deportation order was “unlawful” and a violation of free speech protections.

His attorney, Roberta Kaplan, crowed about the swift ruling, saying, “That was fast. Judge Broderick granted our request for a temporary restraining order so quickly because it is so obvious that Marco Rubio and the other defendants’ actions were blatantly unconstitutional.”

With all due respect to Kaplan, let’s not pretend this is settled—conservative Americans aren’t buying the idea that silencing dissent is a noble cause, no matter how it’s dressed up as protecting kids or fighting hate.

The restraining order specifically bars top officials, including Rubio, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, from detaining Ahmed for now.

A full hearing is set for Monday, where this clash between national security, free expression, and foreign influence will get another round in court.
