A quarter-century after the original Fast and Furious roared into theaters, the franchise's cast has racked up a record of legal trouble, personal scandal, and tragedy that rivals anything Hollywood scriptwriters could dream up.
The blockbuster series that turned street racing into a global phenomenon is now headed toward its eleventh and reportedly final installment, Fast Forever, slated for March 2028. But between the first film and the finale, the actors who made it a cultural juggernaut have lived lives far more turbulent than any on-screen chase sequence. A recent review by The Sun catalogued where the cast stands now, and the picture is not exactly a victory lap.
The most devastating chapter belongs to Paul Walker. The actor who played undercover cop Brian O'Conner died at 40 in November 2013, midway through filming Furious 7. Walker had attended a charity fundraiser for Reach Out Worldwide at a custom car shop in California. He climbed into the passenger seat of a red 2005 Porsche Carrera GT driven by his friend, professional race car driver Roger Rodas, 38. Rodas crashed into a concrete lamp post and a tree at 94 miles per hour. The car caught fire. Both men died.
Walker's brother Caleb stood in as a body double to finish Furious 7, with Paul's face added digitally. His daughter Meadow was 15 when she lost her father. Now 27, she made a cameo in Fast X, married in the Dominican Republic in 2021, and formally divorced in June 2024.
Vin Diesel, whose real name is Mark Sinclear Vincent, remains the franchise's anchor as Dominic Toretto. The 59-year-old walked Meadow Walker down the aisle at her wedding, he is her godfather. He told ET in 2016:
"We've felt the loss. The last three years have been some of the hardest of my life because of losing my brother like that."
But Diesel's own legal troubles surfaced in 2023 when former assistant Asta Jonasson filed a civil lawsuit alleging sexual battery and retaliation. Jonasson claimed the assault occurred in an Atlanta hotel room during filming of Fast Five in 2010 and that she was fired afterward. The lawsuit stated:
"It was clear to her that she was being fired because she was no longer useful, Vin Diesel had used her to fulfill his sexual desires and she had resisted his sexual assaults."
Diesel has denied the claims. An LA judge dismissed the case in November, ruling that California law could not be applied to an offense alleged to have taken place in Georgia.
Michelle Rodriguez, 48, who plays Letty Ortiz, built a career well beyond the franchise with roles in Lost, Avatar, and S.W.A.T. Her off-screen record, however, includes a string of driving-related arrests that would be darkly ironic for a street-racing film star if the consequences had not been so real.
In 2004, Rodriguez pleaded no contest to driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license, and a hit-and-run. Two years later, while filming Lost in Hawaii, she paid a $500 fine and spent five days in jail for driving over the legal alcohol limit. In 2007, a Los Angeles judge sentenced her to 180 days in jail for violating probation on the earlier charge and lying about completing community service. She served 18 days before the jail released her due to overcrowding. She went on to complete the community service.
Rapper Ja Rule, born Jeffrey Atkins, played Edwin in the original film and was reportedly paid $15,000 for the role. He turned down $500,000 for a more prominent part in the sequel. By his own account, he has no regrets.
His career outside the franchise, however, hit a wall. In 2007, he was arrested alongside Lil Wayne. In 2010, he pleaded guilty to attempted possession of a weapon. Six months later, he was sentenced for failing to pay $1.1 million in taxes. He served both sentences concurrently and walked out of prison in May 2013 after two years behind bars.
Then came Fyre Festival. Ja Rule co-founded the disastrous 2017 event alongside Billy McFarland, who was later jailed for fraud. Multiple lawsuits from ticket holders and investors followed. Ja Rule was ultimately cleared of wrongdoing, but McFarland's conviction cemented the festival as one of the most notorious scams in entertainment history.
Tyrese Gibson, 47, joined the franchise as Roman Pearce in 2 Fast 2 Furious and later appeared in the Transformers series. He earned six Grammy nominations and sold four million records in the United States. His personal life has been rougher.
In 2024, Gibson was arrested for failing to pay child support to ex-wife Samantha Lee. A court ordered him to pay $73,500 to avoid jail time. Months later, in October, authorities issued an arrest warrant on an animal cruelty charge after his four cane corso dogs reportedly killed a neighbor's spaniel. Gibson turned himself in, posted $20,000 bail, and was released. His legal team said he accepted responsibility, offered condolences to the neighbor, and had the dogs rehomed.
Rick Yune, 54, played the menacing villain Johnny Tran in the original film and went on to roles in the James Bond film Die Another Day and Olympus Has Fallen. In 2011, a London-based couple sued him, alleging they paid $198,000 for eight Hermès Birkin bags and were promised two additional bags upon payment of another $95,000. They claimed they received neither the bags nor a refund.
Yune's representative pushed back, calling the lawsuit baseless:
"It's a shame someone is trying to tarnish his name and he has fallen victim to a scam."
Ted Levine, 69, who played Paul Walker's police superior Sergeant Tanner, is best known for his role in The Silence of the Lambs. In 2014, TMZ reported that his siblings had taken him to court, alleging he forced them to auction off the family barbecue restaurant for a fraction of its value and left them in financial ruin. His brothers and sister described him as a "sadistic and cruel bully." Levine has continued acting, appearing in Shutter Island, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and a Netflix horror series released earlier this year.
Not every cast member's story involves a courtroom. Jordana Brewster, 46, who plays Mia Loretto, did not even have a driver's license when she was cast in the original film, she took lessons during production. She dated Mark Wahlberg for three years starting in 1998, married twice, and had two sons via surrogacy after doctors advised against carrying her own children. At 28, she was diagnosed with cavernous malformation, a condition affecting blood vessels in the brain. She underwent awake brain surgery in 2020 and is now seizure-free.
Ludacris, born Christopher Brian Bridges, 48, has played mechanic Tej Parker since 2 Fast 2 Furious. He won three Grammy Awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award for his role in the 2004 film Crash. He founded the Ludacris Foundation in 2002 to support youth education and has four daughters. By franchise standards, his post-filming life has been remarkably uneventful.
Dwayne Johnson, 54, joined the series as federal agent Luke Hobbs starting with Fast Five and is expected to return for the finale. The former WWE wrestler became the highest-grossing actor of the 2010s outside the Marvel universe, with his films earning $10.6 billion that decade alone. He has three daughters, the eldest of whom, Simone, 24, now wrestles professionally in the WWE under the name Ava Raine.
Jason Statham, who joined the franchise in 2013 and appeared through 2023 as villain Owen Shaw, was already well established through Guy Ritchie crime films Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. Born in Derbyshire, England, the 59-year-old now splits time between homes in Hollywood, London, and Cornwall, and recently added a property on England's south coast valued at roughly £20 million. He has a son and daughter with model and actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, 39, his fiancée since 2010.
Nathalie Emmanuel, 37, rounds out the later-era cast as hacker Ramsey, appearing in films seven through ten. She first gained attention playing Sasha Valentine on the British soap Hollyoaks before landing roles in Game of Thrones and Blade Runner. Her partner is actor Alex Lanipekun, known for the series Spooks and Homeland.
With Fast Forever set for a 2028 release, the franchise will span nearly three decades by the time it wraps. The films sold audiences on loyalty, family, and living a quarter-mile at a time. Off screen, the cast has dealt with prison sentences, dismissed lawsuits, fatal car crashes, animal cruelty charges, unpaid taxes, and a luxury-handbag scandal.
Hollywood loves a redemption arc. Whether the real lives behind the Fast and Furious franchise amount to one, or just a very long rap sheet, depends on which cast member you ask.
