Meghan Markle’s first photographed outing back in Britain put her with Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi in the Cotswolds, a move experts say undercuts any pitch for a quiet country life.
The 45-year-old royal was recently photographed in England’s Cotswolds with the Hollywood couple, her first such outing since she and Prince Harry returned to the United Kingdom with their children.
Harry and Meghan had announced plans on Aug. 19 to return to the U.K. and relocated later that month. Commentators told Fox News Digital the company she kept sends a clearer signal than any rural setting.
Kinsey Schofield, host of YouTube’s “Kinsey Schofield Unfiltered,” said the choice of companions undercuts the idea of disappearing into country privacy.
"But there is an irony here too. If Harry and Meghan genuinely wanted to disappear into quiet country life, the Cotswolds is one of the places where they could probably accomplish that,"
Schofield told Fox News Digital. She added:
"Instead, Meghan’s first photographed social outing is with Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi. That tells me she remains very interested in celebrity and in being associated with recognizable, high-profile people."
Schofield argued the couple wants publicity and privacy at once, and that Britain will not deliver the seclusion Markle may have expected. That tension has followed the pair through earlier coverage of their U.K. return and Cotswolds reception.
Schofield said the photos suggest Markle is trying to rebuild a familiar pattern from California.
"If anything, this suggests she may be trying to recreate elements of Montecito in the Cotswolds: privacy when she wants it, but with a glamorous and recognizable social circle around her,"
British royals expert Hilary Fordwich agreed the optics were intentional. Fordwich told Fox News Digital:
"Meghan Markle does nothing per chance"
Fordwich said Markle was deliberately photographed with the celebrity couple to show “for all to see that she’s extending her celebrity world from California to the Cotswolds, aiming to be viewed as significant.”
"She’s saying ‘I’m a Hollywood celebrity’ rather than a royal and am thus far 'sticking to celebrity lane insulated by privilege and not integrating into English life,'"
Markle retired from acting in 2017 after her engagement to Harry. She had starred on “Suits” for seven seasons from 2011 to 2017 and earlier appeared on “Deal or No Deal,” along with roles in “Horrible Bosses” and “CSI: Miami.” Reports of her eyeing an acting return ahead of the U.K. move fit the same celebrity lane Fordwich described.
Schofield also flagged the reputational risk of the pairing so soon after the return.
"Ellen’s reputation was badly damaged by allegations about the workplace culture surrounding her show, while Meghan herself has faced serious allegations about her treatment of Palace staff, which she has strongly denied,"
Schofield said. She continued:
"Given that history, I am surprised Meghan would want photographs of the two of them together circulating so soon after her return to Britain. It invites comparisons I would imagine her advisers would rather avoid."
The Palace staff claims dated to the couple’s time based at Kensington Palace before they stepped down as senior working royals in January 2020 and moved to California in March 2020. Markle has denied those allegations. The DeGeneres show allegations remain reported claims in the same coverage, not adjudicated findings in this account.
Privacy strains have already followed the family in other ways, including a separate episode in which Meghan Markle’s phone number leaked in a school WhatsApp group and triggered a security review.
Schofield drew a sharper line between the couple’s preferences now that they are back in Britain. She said Harry still leans toward public engagements and causes, while Markle prefers celebrity and commercial lanes.
"Harry likes the engagements, the causes, the speeches and the sense of public duty,"
Schofield said.
"Meghan seems happier pursuing celebrity and commercial opportunities. So I don’t necessarily think her absence from Harry’s events is accidental. They may simply have very different ideas about what they want their lives back in Britain to look like."
Schofield also noted Markle “consistently polls near the bottom” in royal popularity measures, without citing specific poll numbers, and linked limited public-facing events to that standing. British pushback has already cost her other projects, including reports she lost a Guy Ritchie casting after fierce backlash.
The Cotswolds outing does not settle what the couple’s long-term U.K. role will be. It does show, through the company she kept and the experts’ reading of it, how quickly the old publicity-versus-privacy contradiction returned once the cameras found her again.
Quiet country life is available in the Cotswolds. Meghan Markle’s first big photo set there made clear she is still shopping for the spotlight that comes with famous friends.
