Ethan Hawke tells Drew Barrymore he hoped to date her in the 1990s

Ethan Hawke told Drew Barrymore on her talk show that he wanted to date her in the ’90s but never made a move, hoping something magical would happen on its own.

The Reality Bites star stopped by The Drew Barrymore Show on Friday and admitted the two never crossed paths the way he once imagined. Hawke said he had been aware of Barrymore for as long as he could remember, and still could not believe they never dated.

Barrymore, a fellow ’90s icon and the show’s host, matched the surprise. The exchange turned into a light, teasing look back at a decade when both were everywhere on screen and neither closed the gap.

Hawke waited for the moment that never came

Hawke did not frame it as a grand lost love story. He described a simpler habit from those years.

He told Barrymore there were many nights, “circa the ’90s,” when he headed to a party and wondered if she might show up.

“There was many a night, when I would, it must have been circa the ’90s, I’d be going to a party, and I’d think, ‘Maybe Drew will be there,’”

He said he liked to play it cool. He wanted whatever might happen to unfold without a forced approach.

“I wanted it to happen organically. I thought, you know, something magical would happen.”

Nothing did. They discussed never getting the chance to meet until this appearance, and never dating at all.

Barrymore’s reply was pure talk-show energy

Barrymore did not let the confession sit quietly. She threw herself back on the couch and answered like someone who had heard one too many “what if” stories after the fact.

“Where were you?! Where were you, Ethan?”

She kept going, pointing at the heartthrob status he carried in that era and the open question of why he never picked up a phone.

“What me and every other girl on the planet wouldn’t have given to date you. Where the h*** were you?”

She added the obvious punch line for a missed connection: they still had phones back then. And look what happened. Nothing.

Hawke had already set the tone with an earlier line about long awareness of her, saying he could not remember a time in his life when he was not aware of Barrymore. She said she felt the same about him. The flirtation stayed playful, not bitter.

Two ’90s careers, separate personal timelines

By the time that decade ended, both had full public lives that ran on different tracks.

Barrymore married bar owner Jeremy Thomas in 1994, then comedian Tom Green in 2001. She later married art consultant Will Kopelman in 2012. That marriage ended in 2016. They share daughters Olive and Frankie.

Hawke married actress Uma Thurman in 1998. They split in 2005 after welcoming kids Maya and Levon. He remarried in 2008, wedding Ryan Shawhughes, his former nanny. They have daughters Clementine and Indiana.

Those dates help explain the “never dated” punch line. While Hawke was imagining a chance meeting at a party, both were already moving through marriages, work, and the kind of fame that keeps people busy and heavily scheduled. The show appearance became the first real sit-down the two described sharing.

Hawke arrived on the program as a recognizable face from Reality Bites and newer work referenced on air, still carrying the ’90s imprint that made Barrymore’s reaction land with the audience. Barrymore has kept her daytime show going strong enough that related coverage has noted a renewal through 2028. The visit fit the show’s usual mix of nostalgia, candor, and gentle roasting.

The confession itself stayed narrow. Hawke did not claim a secret campaign or a near-miss relationship. He described a recurring thought, a choice to stay cool, and a bet on organic timing that never paid off. Barrymore’s response turned the miss into comedy rather than regret.

In a business that scripts almost every public moment, a star admitting he sat on his hands waiting for magic is almost quaint, and a reminder that even famous people used to leave some things to chance.
