A direct hit on American territory

That kind of wind speed doesn't just knock down trees. It shreds roofs, collapses structures, and turns debris into projectiles. The FOX Forecast Center warned that Bavi's wind field is likely to expand significantly as it approaches, bringing the potential for hurricane-force winds across all of the islands, Guam, Rota, Saipan, and Tinian.

The Sinlaku precedent

The Mariana Islands know what a super typhoon can do. Last year, Super Typhoon Sinlaku struck the Northern Mariana Islands and left 17 people dead. Estimated damages reached $1.5 billion, a staggering figure for a territory with a modest economic base and limited infrastructure redundancy.

That disaster exposed the vulnerability of these far-flung American communities. Recovery was slow, federal attention was fleeting, and the islands were left to rebuild with resources that never quite matched the scale of the destruction. Natural disasters across the Pacific basin have a way of testing the durability of both infrastructure and political commitment.

Now, barely a year later, another potentially devastating storm is tracking toward the same region. The question is whether the lessons of Sinlaku translated into concrete preparedness, hardened shelters, pre-positioned supplies, clear evacuation protocols, or whether they simply produced press releases and promises.

Meanwhile, the same El Niño pattern that supercharges the Pacific has suppressed storm activity in the Atlantic basin. The Atlantic hurricane season opened with below-normal forecasts, a stark contrast to the escalating threat in the Pacific. For Americans living on Guam or Saipan, the quiet Atlantic is cold comfort.

Separate storms, shared urgency

The Western Pacific is dealing with more than one active threat. Typhoon Jangmi has prompted evacuations across multiple municipalities in Okinawa, Japan, where authorities have opened emergency shelters and airlines have canceled hundreds of flights. Severe impacts from Jangmi are expected to continue through the near term.

The simultaneous development of Jangmi and Bavi underscores just how active the Northwest Pacific has become. Extreme weather patterns have been stacking up across the globe, and the Pacific typhoon season is no exception.

For the Mariana Islands specifically, the concern is Bavi. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center's track has the storm arriving this weekend, with peak intensity projected for Monday.
