A substitute teacher praised by her school district, her husband, and their six children, ages 5 to 15, were all found dead inside their Grand Haven Township, Michigan, home Friday, with authorities now investigating the fire as a possible murder-suicide.
Firefighters responded to reports of smoke in the area between 8:30 and 9 a.m. that morning but could not locate the source. Hours later, around noon, emergency responders discovered all eight bodies inside the home. Some of the victims had gunshot wounds, the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office confirmed during a news conference, though officials did not say which family members were shot.
The dead have been identified by family members as Amanda "Mandy" Karolkiewicz, 39; her husband Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47; and their six children. The Ottawa County Medical Examiner's Office had not yet officially confirmed the identities as of Friday evening. The children's names have not been released publicly.
Capt. Jacob Sparks of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office described the scene as "complicated" but offered few additional details. Neither the sheriff's office nor the medical examiner's office returned requests for comment from the New York Post.
Police are not looking for any outside suspects, NBC News reported. That detail, combined with the gunshot wounds and the fire, has led investigators to treat the case as a possible murder-suicide, though authorities have not publicly confirmed that conclusion or named a suspect.
No motive has been disclosed. No arrests have been made. The cause of the fire itself remains under investigation, and it is unclear whether the fire or the gunshot wounds caused any individual death.
Amanda Karolkiewicz worked as a substitute teacher in Grand Haven Area Public Schools. She was assigned to Peach Plains Elementary School, where the district praised her in a Facebook post earlier this year, saying she "goes above and beyond" for students.
Superintendent Kristin Perowski issued a statement Friday evening offering support and mental health resources to the school community. The full text of Perowski's statement was not made public in initial reports.
Kristopher Karolkiewicz posted a photo with his wife on Facebook in 2019 with the caption:
"Going on 10 years with this pretty lady. I'm a very lucky guy."
By the time of his death, the couple had been together roughly 16 years.
Amanda's sister, Molly Cessna, identified the family in a Facebook post, writing that the dead included "my little sister Mandy, her husband, and my six nieces and nephews." In a second post, Cessna described the family's grief in raw terms:
"Everything's just blurry. Please continue to pray, friends. please continue to pray as we try and piece everything together. Our hearts are utterly shattered. Tragic doesn't even touch it."
Amanda's parents, Steve and Becky Lawwill, shared a family beach photo on Facebook alongside their own brief message:
"So grateful for the joy they brought into our life. We are just so shattered."
The Lawwills declined to comment further, telling the Post they were still awaiting details from the medical examiner's office.
Authorities have not said who in the household owned or had access to a firearm. They have not disclosed whether the gunshot wounds were found on the adults, the children, or both. The children's individual ages beyond the 5-to-15 range have not been released, nor have their names.
Firefighters who responded to the early-morning smoke reports were unable to find its source, a gap of roughly three hours before the bodies were discovered. How and when the fire started, and whether it was set deliberately, remain open questions in the investigation.
Grand Haven Township sits along the Lake Michigan shoreline in western Michigan, a small community where a substitute teacher known for going "above and beyond" would be recognized at the grocery store, at church, at school pickup. Six children between kindergarten and high school age would have touched nearly every corner of the local school system.
Whatever investigators ultimately determine happened inside that home, the facts already known are devastating enough: eight people from a single family are dead, and the community that knew them best is left with grief and unanswered questions. When the answers do come, they will not soften the loss.
