Anne Hathaway said her doctor told her to skip the “Hot Ones” spicy-wing gauntlet while pregnant, warning the challenge could push her into early labor.

The Academy Award-winning actor shared the news on a Monday episode of the “Talk of the Townsends” podcast while promoting the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s “Verity.” TODAY reported her account of the medical advice and the press-tour stop she had hoped to make.

Hathaway had eyed the YouTube interview series as a natural fit for the junket. She had already sampled the format once, then planned a full run for this film. Pregnancy changed the plan.

She finished three real wings, then switched to fakes

Hathaway described an earlier brush with the show’s heat ladder. She did not complete the full run then either.

She told the podcast:

“We did the first three wings for real, and then I switched to dummy wings. And then I thought that I was gonna be able to do the ‘Hot Ones’ challenge to do press for this film because it just made sense.”

The pregnancy diagnosis ended that idea. Her doctor drew a hard line.

Hathaway said:

“But then I got pregnant, and my doctor said I couldn’t do it because I might go into early labor.”

“Hot Ones,” created by Sean Evans, has run on YouTube since 2015. Guests answer questions while eating chicken wings that grow steadily hotter. The bit has drawn stars including Jennifer Lawrence, Lorde, and Keke Palmer, and “Saturday Night Live” has spoofed it twice.

Busy year on screen, family already at home

Hathaway is in the middle of a heavy stretch of releases. “Verity” is her fifth film this year. She has also starred in “The Devil Wears Prada 2” and “The Odyssey.”

At home she and her husband, actor-producer and jewelry designer Adam Shulman, are already raising two young sons. The doctor’s warning put the wing challenge on hold for the newest arrival.

She has not ruled the show out forever. She still wants a clean shot at the full ladder.

Hathaway said:

“I still haven’t done the gauntlet yet.”

And she added:

“I’m not sure when that’s gonna happen. Maybe next year.”

No independent statement from the doctor appears in the reporting, and the podcast did not detail her due date or how far along she is. The medical caution stands on her own account.

When a physician flags early labor, the sensible move is to listen, Hollywood stunts can wait for another press cycle.
