There's a chilling scene out of Fall River, Massachusetts, where a former mayor was brutally attacked in broad daylight.

Will Flanagan, once the youngest mayor in Fall River’s history, was viciously stabbed in the neck and face outside a cannabis dispensary around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, with the suspect, Corree Gonzales, later arrested and charged in connection with this shocking act of violence, as the Daily Mail reports.

Flanagan, 44, was near Cosmopolitan Dispensary, about 50 miles south of Boston, when the assault unfolded.

Violent attack shocks community

The suspect, 31-year-old Gonzales, struck Flanagan repeatedly in a frenzied attack, targeting his face and neck with ruthless intent. Flanagan fought back, desperately trying to fend off his assailant, but ultimately collapsed on the sidewalk, overwhelmed by his injuries. Bleeding heavily, he staggered toward a nearby housing complex, where stunned onlookers watched him limp closer, mumbling incoherently as he sought help.

“I saw a guy mumbling some words. He came out, brushed up against the guy, stabbed him on the face and the neck,” said witness Karen Cange, painting a grim picture of the chaos.

Let’s unpack that -- random violence erupting on a public street, with no clear motive. It's the kind of breakdown in order we’ve been warning about when societal guardrails erode under progressive policies. Flanagan, bloodied and dazed, called for police but didn’t enter the housing complex, leaving bystanders shaken by the raw brutality they had just witnessed.

Details of victim's condition, suspect's arrest emerge

Emergency responders rushed Flanagan to a hospital, where he remains in serious but stable condition, a testament to his resilience after such a savage ordeal.

Meanwhile, Gonzales fled the scene, but law enforcement tracked him down. They arrested him later that morning at 8:30 a.m. in connection with the stabbing.

At his arraignment that same day, Gonzales pleaded not guilty, but his behavior didn’t stop there. He reportedly attacked police officers during the arrest, racking up four additional counts of assault and battery.

Gonzales’ troubled past raises questions

Court documents reveal Gonzales has been listed as homeless in arrests throughout this year, alongside a history of troubling behavior, including alleged threats against his own mother and sister.

His mother disclosed that Gonzales has battled mental illness since age 15, and now he’s set for a mental health evaluation while being held without bail -- a sad but necessary step when public safety hangs in the balance.

While empathy for mental health struggles is warranted, it’s hard to ignore the pattern here. Unchecked issues too often spill into public spaces, leaving communities to bear the cost of a system that prioritizes feelings over firm accountability.

Flanagan’s legacy, hopes for recovery

Flanagan, who served as Fall River’s mayor from 2010 to 2014 after being elected at just 29, was a polarizing figure, ousted in a 2014 recall over a controversial trash policy and allegations of intimidating a city councilor with a firearm.

Since leaving office, he’s returned to practicing law, but hours before the attack, he was engaging with followers live on Facebook, unaware of the violence that awaited him.

“He’s a good guy. I wish him a speedy recovery,” added Cange, a sentiment that cuts through political divides in a moment of raw human tragedy -- and one we should all echo, even if we question the cultural rot that lets such attacks fester.
