DHS memos flag MN Gov. Tim Walz’s CCP ties

Shocking internal memos expose Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s troubling ties to the Chinese Communist Party. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the FBI raised red flags about his connections, sparking a firestorm of concern, as Just the News reports. This isn’t just another politician cozying up to foreign powers -- it’s a wake-up call.

Newly uncovered documents reveal DHS and FBI worries about Walz’s China links, intensified after Vice President Kamala Harris tapped him as her running mate on Aug. 6, 2024. Judicial Watch, through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit, forced DHS to release these records in 2025. The papers detail a web of interactions that have investigators on edge.

Walz’s China saga began in 1989, teaching English in China just months after the Tiananmen Square massacre. He later claimed he was in Hong Kong during the protests but couldn’t confirm it when pressed. That’s a convenient memory lapse for someone now under federal scrutiny.

Early ties raise eyebrows

As a Nebraska high school teacher in the 1990s, Walz organized roughly 30 student trips to China starting in 1993. Some of these trips were partially funded by the Chinese government, a detail that doesn’t exactly scream “independent educator.” He even welcomed CCP officials into his classroom, rolling out the red carpet for Beijing.

Walz described China’s system to a Nebraska newspaper, saying, “The doctor and the construction worker make the same.” He praised their government-provided housing and rice allotments, sounding more like a CCP spokesperson than a Midwestern teacher. This rosy view of communism raises questions about his judgment.

“Everyone is the same and everyone shares,” Walz gushed to the Alliance Times-Herald. That’s a bizarre endorsement of a regime notorious for crushing dissent. It’s no wonder federal investigators started digging deeper.

Federal probes intensify

By 2024, whistleblowers tipped off the House Oversight Committee about Walz’s “serious” China connections. The committee, led by Chairman James Comer, launched a probe into his repeated visits and interactions with Chinese officials. Comer’s team smelled something fishy, and they weren’t wrong.

In September 2024, Comer subpoenaed DHS for records, frustrated by the Biden administration’s stonewalling. DHS had resisted handing over documents, prompting suspicions of a cover-up. Judicial Watch’s lawsuit finally cracked open a 47-page trove of internal communications in 2025.

The documents came from a DHS group chat called “NST NFT Bi-Weekly Sync,” where investigators tracked China’s “subnational engagement” with U.S. officials. On Aug. 7, 2024, a DHS employee shared a BBC article noting China’s glee over Walz’s VP nod, writing, “China is happy.” That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement for a potential vice president.

Investigators sound alarm

“Walt’s got the Vp,” an unidentified DHS official wrote in the chat, adding, “You all have no idea how this feeds into what the prc has been doing here with him and local gov.” The misspelled urgency underscores the panic among investigators. China’s influence operations were clearly on their radar.

Another DHS employee stressed the need to loop in the FBI, writing, “With FBI mission in the CI field i believe they need to get included.” The FBI was already probing Walz’s China ties, making it the second agency waving red flags. This wasn’t just a DHS hunch -- it was a multi-agency concern.

Comer’s subpoena letter in September 2024 warned that Walz’s ties could expose “alarming weaknesses” in U.S. defenses against CCP influence. He argued that a vice-presidential candidate entangled in Beijing’s “political warfare” demands urgent scrutiny. That’s a polite way of saying Walz might be a national security liability.

China’s influence under scrutiny

“It might be the Chinese,” Walz mused in 2025 at a Center for American Progress event, suggesting China could be a global moral authority. That’s a jaw-dropping statement from someone eyeing the vice presidency. It’s hard to imagine a worse pick to counter Beijing’s global ambitions.

Tom Fitton of Judicial Watch didn’t mince words, stating, “This is every bit as important as the Russiagate disclosures.” He accused the Biden administration of burying the issue to sway the 2024 election. That’s a bold claim, but the DHS’s reluctance to release records doesn’t help their case.

Walz’s office dodged requests for comment from Just the News, leaving the public in the dark. With federal agencies, whistleblowers, and Congress raising alarms, his silence speaks volumes. Americans deserve answers about whether their leaders are too cozy with the CCP.
