Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis warned residents Friday to evacuate threatened areas as Category 3 Hurricane Isaias closed in on the northern Gulf Coast for evening landfall.

DeSantis pressed Floridians in the storm’s path to move out ahead of the first big storm of the season. The Washington Examiner reported the governor’s call as the system bore down on the Florida Panhandle and Alabama.

As of 3 p.m., Hurricane Isaias sat about 125 miles south of Pensacola, Florida, and 140 miles south of Mobile, Alabama. Tropical storm conditions were already spreading onshore.

The National Hurricane Center tracked the Category 3 storm to hit the north Gulf Coast on Friday evening before it reached Alabama.

Category 3 storm aims at Florida Panhandle and Alabama

DeSantis directed the warning at areas expected to feel the heaviest effects. Florida residents along the threatened stretch faced a short window before the hurricane made landfall.

The Gulf Coast braced for the season’s first major hit. Isaias carried Category 3 strength while tropical storm conditions pushed inland hours ahead of the main core.

Pensacola and Mobile served as the clearest reference points for the storm’s position Friday afternoon. From there the forecast carried the system north onto the coast and then into Alabama later that evening.

No specific zone maps or injury reports accompanied the initial warning in the available details. The core message from the governor stayed simple: leave the areas expected to take the direct hit.

State leaders who issue clear evacuation calls give residents time to act before roads clog and winds rise. DeSantis put that call out while the National Hurricane Center still showed the storm offshore but closing fast.

When a hurricane is hours from the coast, early movement beats last-minute scrambles every time.
