Democrats break decades-long drought in Miami with historic mayoral win

Miami just flipped the political script in a way few saw coming.

In a stunning upset, Democrat Eileen Higgins clinched the Miami mayoral runoff on Tuesday, shattering a nearly 30-year losing streak for her party in the city often dubbed the "Gateway to Latin America," while defeating Republican Emilio Gonzalez in a race that gripped national attention, as Fox News reports.

This election turned into a high-stakes battle between Democrats and Republicans, with both sides pouring in resources to sway voters in a city that remains a rare blue stronghold in an increasingly red Florida.

From Underdog to Historic Victory

Higgins, a mechanical engineer and former Peace Corps director in Belize, campaigned on making local government more efficient and tackling affordability.

In the initial vote on Nov. 4, she led with 36% in a crowded field, while Gonzalez trailed with 19%, forcing the contest into a runoff since no candidate hit the 50% mark.

Fast forward to the Dec. 9 showdown, and Higgins not only won but also etched her name in history as the first woman to lead Miami as mayor.

Republican Support Falls Short

On the other side, Gonzalez, a veteran and senior advisor at an asset management firm, had the backing of heavy hitters, including an endorsement from President Donald Trump himself, who called the race "big and important."

Trump urged voters to support the Republican contender with a direct plea: "Miami's mayoral election is a big and important race!!! Vote for Republican Gonzalez." But even with the Republican Party of Florida throwing resources behind Gonzalez, who once served on Trump’s Homeland Security transition team, it wasn’t enough to seal the deal.

Let’s be real. When the MAGA megaphone can’t turn out a win in a city Trump narrowly lost in 2024, it’s a signal that even loyal bases might be wavering, especially among Hispanic and Latino voters who’ve been trending right but may now be rethinking their stance.

Democrat Momentum on Display

For Democrats, this victory is more than just a local win; it’s a shot of adrenaline after a string of strong showings in 2025, including a surprising double-digit overperformance in a Tennessee special election just last week.

The Democratic National Committee and allied groups didn’t hold back, investing heavily in Miami, with DNC chair Ken Martin declaring to Fox News Digital, "Following last week's historic overperformance in Tennessee and the record Democratic momentum across the country this year, the DNC is now laser focused on Miami's mayoral runoff."

While Martin’s crowing about “momentum” might sound like typical partisan spin, the numbers don’t lie -- Higgins’ win suggests the left might be clawing back some ground in a state that’s drifted hard right under leaders like Gov. Ron DeSantis, who crushed his 2022 re-election by nearly 20 points.

What This Means for Florida’s Future

Higgins now steps into the shoes of outgoing Republican Mayor Francis Suarez, who made waves with a short-lived GOP presidential bid a couple of years back but couldn’t carry his party’s torch to victory here through his successor.

While Florida as a whole has become less of a battleground and more of a Republican fortress -- evidenced by Trump carrying the state by 13 points in 2024 -- Miami’s resistance to that trend, coupled with Higgins’ success, hints at cracks in the GOP’s armor.

For conservatives, this loss stings. It’s a reminder to focus on bread-and-butter issues like overdevelopment and property tax relief -- points Gonzalez pushed hard -- rather than banking solely on national endorsements in a city with unique, diverse priorities.
