Christina Applegate returned home after four months in a Los Angeles hospital to find her 15-year-old daughter had arranged a garland greeting that captured the family's dark humor, and the weight of a years-long fight with multiple sclerosis.
The Golden Globe-winning actress shared the photo on Instagram, showing a letter garland her daughter Sadie Grace LeNoble had strung up with a simple, cheeky message: "You're home. Happy day, ho." Applegate captioned the post, "[I] meant to post this a while ago. My kid is so my kid hahaha."
It was a light moment at the end of an ordeal that began in March, when Applegate, 54, was hospitalized in Los Angeles. Whether the hospitalization was directly tied to her MS diagnosis remained unclear at the time. She was not discharged until early August, a stretch of roughly four months that tested the actress, her husband, musician Martyn LeNoble, and their teenage daughter.
After weeks of public silence following her March hospitalization, Applegate posted on Instagram in April. She shared a photo of a coffee mug resting on her memoir, You with the Sad Eyes, and addressed her fans directly.
"Thank you for the outpouring of love and well wishes. Health issues are a constant for me, but I'm a strong chick.... I'm taking a moment to focus on my health, but I'll be back with more to say soon enough."
Her representative, speaking to Page Six, offered no specifics about her condition or treatment.
"I have no comment on whether she is in the hospital or what her medical treatments are. She has had a long history of complicated medical conditions that she has been refreshingly open about, as evidence in her memoir and on her podcast."
That guarded response stood in contrast to the fear described by those closer to the situation. An unnamed source told the Daily Mail in April that the hospital stay had been harrowing for Applegate's inner circle.
"With every setback, if we are being realistic, everyone has it in the back of their minds that they might not have a tomorrow with her."
The same source described Applegate's daily reality in blunt terms.
"Christina is a fighter, but her battle with MS has been treacherous. She has better days and really bad days; she doesn't have great days. She's always dealing with something. It sucks."
But the source also noted that support from friends made a difference: "When she does look at things positively, it makes her feel better in the moment because she has so many friends that are there for her, even to listen to her, cry with her and anything in between."
Applegate first disclosed her MS diagnosis publicly in August 2021, posting on X that she had been diagnosed "a few months" earlier.
"Hi friends. A few months ago I was diagnosed with MS. It's been a strange journey. But I have been so supported by people that I know who also have this condition."
She followed that with a line that captured her characteristic refusal to soften the edges: "It's been a tough road. But as we all know, the road keeps going. Unless some a**hole blocks it."
The star of Dead to Me and Married... with Children has been candid about how the disease has reshaped her daily life, and how it has affected Sadie. Applegate has described watching her daughter witness her decline up close.
"I see her look at me when I'm in bed and can't quite move, or I want to go say good night to her in her room, but I can't quite get down the hallway for whatever reason that my legs aren't working that day."
Applegate has also said Sadie has "always got her arm" throughout the journey with the disease. And she has acknowledged that MS has "broken" her daughter emotionally, a frank admission from a mother watching her child carry a burden no 15-year-old should have to shoulder.
Applegate's friend and former co-star Selma Blair, who appeared alongside her in The Sweetest Thing, was diagnosed with MS in 2018. Applegate's 2021 disclosure referenced people she knew with the condition, though she did not name Blair specifically.
The two actresses have navigated the same disease in the public eye, each with a different trajectory. For Applegate, the four-month hospitalization this year marked one of the longest and most serious known episodes since her diagnosis.
But when she finally walked through her front door, it was not a hospital discharge summary or a doctor's prognosis waiting for her. It was a teenager's garland, hand-arranged, reading: "You're home. Happy day, ho."
